Sympathy gifts?

My neighbor whom I'm friendly with just lost her father (he had been ill for quite some time and had spent the last few weeks in the hospital.) Unfortunately I wasn't made aware of it until the day of the funeral when guests showed up at their home in black. (I was returning from an overnight stay in NYC when my MIL, who had been watching our DC, informed me.) I most definitely would have gone to the services had we known, but knowing there was a lot going on, I'm sure notifying us was the last thing on her or her DH's mind.

I'd like to send a sympathy gift to her and her family (they have 4 girls ranging from 17-9.)

Are sweet treats inappropriate? I was thinking about sending a "Thinking of you" Fairytale Brownies package?

Or should I just stick with flowers?

I was going to send something to her mom too (I see her often at the bus stop and we chat), but I figured flowers might be best for her?

Any suggestions?

Sympathy gifts?

Especially with 4 girls I'd send goodies or even gift certificates to a local restaurant or take out place.

I would do a GC to a local takeout place. This way they don't have to worry about cooking anything.

Sympathy gifts?

Id send a floral arrangement/plant or edible arrangement. I'd also include a handwritten card.

Brownies or any food is nice. When my mom passed away, I couldn't stand the smell of flowers in my house. Reminded me of the funeral home.Chat Icon

I totally agree about not sending flowers for the reason posted above. Gift cards for food or sweet treats are a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestions girls. Chat Icon

I agree a GC would be a nice idea, but for some reason I feel funny putting a monetary value on sympathy gift.

I decided to send a basket that contains flowering plants/greenery. I opted for something that didn't have a strong fragrance because I'm not a fan of many bouquets, especially if they have lilies. Like you guys, it reminds me of funeral homes.

And I'm just going to send her mom a sympathy card. My husband thinks she probably has enough flowers.

Thanks again for your help! Chat Icon

I hate flowers after a funeral in my home it is a sad reminded for me. Plus the end up dying and making a mess when you're grieving you don't want to deal with throwing away dead flowers. I always send a fruit basket, sweet treats, gift cards or even money.
