Would you move houses during the school year?

If you were moving about an hour away, and your kids were Pre-K and K, would you move during the school year, or wait for summer break? Or does Xmas break count for anything if it was a possibility to start a new school when everyone comes back in January?

At that age I would. They are still so young. I think they would adjust fine.

ITA with the above poster... when they are that young I wouldn't have a problem.

Yes: there are so many factors cc buying a house & the availability, I wouldn't care about the kid's preK or K.

I wouldn't want to. If you have something in contract I believe you can register for the new school before the start of the year.

At that age, absolutely. Jr. High and High School..............I'd wait but when they are so little they adjust so easily.

We moved into our home three days before the start of the school year. It was difficult, but I was able to get my kids into our new district for the first day of school. We actually had to write a check for eighteen thousand dollars, to cover the cost of public school. The uncashed check was returned to is once I had our closing documents and a utility bill in our name. We had to provide a lot of documents to the school before we could have the kids attend. It involved multiple trips to different administrative buildings and was a complete pita. So having done it, I would aim to be in before school starts by more than five days.

DD was in Kindergarten when we moved last Feb. We were only 25 min away so, fortunately, she was able to stay in the same school. At that age, I don't think it's that big a deal. I find that most children that age can adapt very easily.

Just offering my experience on this because : #1- I moved 5X with kids due to husbands job. #2- What I found MOST successful for my children goes against what most might think is conventional wisdom
Regarding OP, your kids are so young and therefore will adjust regardless of when you move. What happened to me was that I followed conventenial wisdom and moved in June when child #1 was entering 5th grade and her sister 2nd grade. Turned out to be a really difficult summer and not only because we left a place we loved. Biggest issue was that but for the ONE family of same aged kids 2 houses up the street, the were no real opportunities for them (or me for that matter) to meet anyone else until school started. It was a long and lonely summer for me and my girls. Flash forward to 5 yrs later when another move had us coming to LI (home for me was Nassau Co, but due to his job location, we landed in Suffolk Co.) He had been here working since January but it wasn't until early March when we sold our house. At the time, #1 was in 9th grade, #2 in 6th. Happened to move into the 3 Village SD where HS begins in 10th and Jr. High in 7th. One horrific summer in a new place was enough for me to know what my kids needed. And that was to meet and know classmates PRIOR to the summer starting. BEST decision I ever made and that is because I had already experienced the downside of moving early summer.
