Haven't been to Fire Island since I was a kid... any suggestions for a day trip with a 5 year old boy?

Re: Fire Island day trip with 5 year old??
The beaches are fun -- I would try and go during the week if you can to avoid major crowds and try and be out of there by the time it gets dark and the drunkards come out.
We went at night once, because I was with friends and we went to have dinner and go drinking, and this poor family with two young kids ended up missing a ferry and having to catch the like 8 or 9pm ferry -- on a Saturday night -- oyyyyy. Poor kids and parents were surrounded by drunk morons.
I might have been feeling good but I certainly acted the right way -- unlike everyone else!
So yeah I would suggest the beaches, you can rent bikes, you can have lunch, bring plenty of bottled water and stuff to change into and things like that. It gets real hot, sunscreen is a must obviously. And it's super duper casual there.
I wonder if any hotels would let you use their pools as a day pass set-up??
We left from Bay Shore but you can leave from Sayville as well.

I would go to Sailor's Haven. It's so nice, not crowded at all during the week, they have a snack bar, bathrooms, and you can eat on the beach. There is also the Sunken Forest that you can walk through (on a boardwalk). It's our favorite beach!! We take the ferry from Sayvile, and usually get on the first one out and spend the whole day. Also, you can do the Jr. Ranger programs in the welcome center. They give out a guide book, and have some touch and feel stuff inside the center.

Fire Island day trip with 5 year old??
We went last summer with my 3 year old for the day. We had lunch, played on the beach, then went home. I have to say, going with a young child that likes to get sandy was pretty messy coming off the beach. The "shower" is in the sand, and it's hard to get all of the sand off. Also, there is only 1 bathroom and shower that we saw. We had a great time, but leaving the beach was a PIA.

Where did you go?
Sailor's Haven has a shower that is not on the beach, it's on the boardwalk at the restrooms. I would try there next time
