Am I allowed to ask on here
...if someone is selling something I need? I'm not sure what the rule is on that and I didn't want to chance starting a problem.

Yes! Ask away! I think ppl are happy to sell/share/trade on here. (its advertising services or direct sales that are not LIF approved that's not permitted)
