Re: Filing unemployment?
Yup..but I believe the benefits wont start until your severance is done. Or they will ask how much severance and vacation pay was.
but you are definitely eligible to apply.
Sorry...I know how it feels.

Sadly I lost my job today which I was at for 14 years. The company was bought out and my position eliminated. I am getting a severance package, but can I still claim unemployment? I've never dealt with this so I am unsure how it works.
SO SORRY, YES bc you lost your job not by choice. My company just filed chapter 11 and I could have filed as well.
They owe me lots $$ 4 weeks vacation and severance which I have to petition the courts for

Re: Filing unemployment?
I was let go last year and received a lump sum severance payment which was the equivalent of 16 weeks' pay. When I filed for unemployment, I was not eligible to collect until after the 16 weeks had ended, even though I was paid in a lump sum. HTH! Very sorry you lost your job. :(

Filing unemployment?
I'm so sorry. I lost my job of ten years in April. I was devastated but I really was miserable at my old place so it was a kick in the butt to get something else going. Four weeks later I have a new job that I'm excelling at and I am soooo happy! I pray the same happens to you!

Wow, that must be something new because about 8 years ago when I was laid off and giving a lump sum severance, I was able to collect unemployment right away. I guess it changed.

The rule changed in January of 2014.

Filing unemployment?
From what I understand you can file but you won't be able to collect until your severance runs out. Sorry you lost your job you find something soon.

Re: Filing unemployment?
Everyone answered your question already but I wanted to share a few things with you. I'm not sure if you're in Suffolk but when I got laid off, I had to report to the unemployment office in Hauppauge and dreaded it but it was actually a good experience. They have materials and assistance that helped me because like you, I hadn't needed to look for a job in many years.
I'd recommend a plan based on your financial situation on which jobs you would consider/accept. I spent 1-2 months looking for exactly the job I had/wanted and 3rd month looking for anything in my field. That's when I found my job, and although the job I applied for wasn't exactly what I wanted, they changed the position and salary for me because of my experience.
I'd also recommend staying as busy as possible. I used the time to get to the gym more and it helped tremendously. I know how devastated you feel right now, hurt and angry. It's a very bad thing to happen to someone especially after so many years. I wish you the best.
