Hours & locations opinions for "Meet the Baby" Party

Looking to do a meet the baby party (name TBD) when she is about a month old.

We're torn between at our house or at a "place" (I'm leaning towards my house) and we're not sure how many hours to put on the invite ie "Come see the baby, 12p-3p"

Ideas that have worked or not worked for you?

We're on the North Shore/Nassau if that helps if you had a caterer or venue recommendation that wont break the bank! Chat Icon

The Riviera in Glen Cove has some good pkgs but it's not a totally separate private room.
The Locust Valley Inn has a small private room upstairs (good for like 20ish ppl) with really cheap pkgs. Or if you have more like 40-50 they will give you the whole restaurant.
Antonettes on Glen cove road has a beautiful upstairs private room but their pkgs aren't as cheap as the others

Baby can be very fussy at 1 month.
Personally, I'd pick a prelim date that works for family & invite others last minute.
I hosted a party at 2 months & really regretted it (and that was just family).
I'd def do it at your house/backyard if you could swing that.

The last one I went to was very simple & great.
They did an AM thing: bagels, salmon, cream cheese, fruit salad, juices & coffee.
People came & went, but it lasted about 2 hours (10-12).

I do too!!

Thank you to everyone with the ideas. I will keep them for all future events to refer to. But I think this is what we're leaning towards.

Great idea!

I personally would never send an invite out for something like this - it sounds to me like a solicitation for a gift. I would just invite people over for brunch and not call it a "meet the baby" party.

I was going to say, at one month old, DD screamed 24/7. I got no sleep. DH got no sleep.
We were exhausted and a hot mess
I don't think we'd want to be out at a formal restaurant type party with the baby. Not to mention, she would have been screaming bloody murder the whole time and nobody would have enjoyed themselves.
I'd host a little something in your home...this way you and baby are more comfortable.
The newborn stage was an absolute nightmare for us.

I never heard of this, but there's no way I'd do one outside of my house. I would want the baby to be set up in a nice bassinet where s/he can just sleep the time away, or where I can slip away to nurse in my bedroom. Anything formal though, with official invites and all of that just seems like a lot of work. A month after birth, I was in no mood to try and get dressed up and be 'normal' while living off of no sleep with a baby hooked to my boob. I agree with PP who mentioned that it also kinda seems to be solicitation for gifts which I think is tacky. That's probably not your intention though, in which case, I'd just invite over some friends for food or tea or dessert or something simple like that where they can also see the new baby. I'd feel weird getting an invite to something where there wasn't more to it than just a baby viewing. lol.

I agree. We just had friends come at certain times over the first couple of months and they were all nice enough to bring us lunch or dinner. Laid back and casual. DD could sleep, I could pump when I needed. It was perfect.

What the hell does that mean???

People have baby namings and a bris with little babies. I need to find a time for everyone to come at once so I dont' need a constant stream of visitors my entire maternity leave....

ODD thing to say. Love how MEAN people on this board feel like they can be to each other. It was established to HELP each other..

I think this sounds like a GREAT idea actually. After I had my baby, I hated having people constantly asking to come over to see him. I was too tired to clean my house for guests on a daily basis and too tired to entertain or make people coffee. If you have a gathering on a certain day, you get all of the visits done on a certain day. I know some people like having constant visitors, but I am not one of them.

I don't think this is weird at all. I have gone to a few of these. No, I did not think it was tacky. In fact, I wish I could have done this instead of having 70+ people visit me at different times after I had my DS ... it got annoying and was inconvenient most times bc I was trying to breastfeed or sleep bc I was exhausted.

I would suggest doing it at home where you are most comfortable. I've used a really good caterer but they are in Queens. Message me if you still want the details.

Re: Hours & locations opinions for "Meet the Baby" Party

Ok I posted on the other thread now I'm posting here. I'm going to give MY opinion. I think maybe it should be held in your home(if you have the space). It kind of sounds like "A Sip and See" where people see the baby for the first time and may bring a gift. Most of the time it's held in your home and drinks(punch or whatever you like) and appetizers are served.

Usually people who don't have showers(religion, not their first baby, etc) has these.

I personally am not having a party or shower or anything if people want to see the baby they can visit at the hospital or once I'm home. I have a 21 month and will be breastfeeding a newborn no time to entertain.

thank you! Yeah I was thinking it would be a nice day that may be hard that one day but it's better than having so many times to clean up!

It's interesting to hear the other side. Since it's our first and also one of the first babies in my generation family-wise I know I'm going to have a lot of visitors so figured if I can serve everyone some nice food and make it a little event, then it would cut down on my constant need to clean up and clean myself up! hahaa

Hours & locations opinions for

It was very different for us at 1 month, my grandmother was in the hospital, underwent 3 surgeries, was in ICU, she went in at 1 month PP. DS was also 1 month premmie, and spent 5 days in the NICU. I don't know if I could have handled having a large group at the house, trying to clean and prepare for it. I barely had energy to get to the hospital to see my grandma. That said, I don't know how it would have been if he were full term, grandma wasn't so sick, etc... I also wouldn't be comfortable with having more than immediately family around him that early. Any fever over 100.4 under 2 months/8weeks is an automatic trip to the hospital and, according to the PICU nurses I know, any infant that is admitted with a fever gets an automatic spinal tap. I, personally, and again this is me, I would wait until after 8 weeks if it's going to be more than immediate family. And we're not even that neurotic! Chat Icon

My son was born in January so I wouldn't have been comfortable with so many people around him during flu season, but since you are having a summer baby and can hopefully be outside, I think it's a great idea.

Also be aware that people will want to hold the baby, so make sure you're ok with 20-30 people holding your baby in one day. You also may think yore ok with it, then once the baby come become an overprotective freak like me :)

I'd never be able to do this because my mom and MIL would hog the baby so much nobody else would get to see her!!!!

Wow! PiccoloDue - That was SO satisfying. Thank you. Exactly. Wasn't asking if I should do a party - just was asking what people liked as far as kind of food, caterer so I didn't have to cook, etc.
