Anyone NOT do summer camp or similar program?
My kids hang out with my sister and their cousins while im at work. They like hanging out w family during the summer but sometimes i feel like im depriving them of something. I feel like everyone sends their kids to some sort of camp. I wont lie, i like saving the money lol. I ask them if they want to do camp at least for July and they say no.

Re: Anyone NOT do summer camp or similar program?
My dd always went to camp and loved it (cheaper town camp, not as many ammenities but cost thousands less). My ds had a really hard time a few years ago going so now he stays home and goes to work with my dh. He is old enough to stay home alone but the kids fight and he is not 100% comfortable staying home for many hours yet.

I'm SAHM so my kids don't go to camp but we do all the "camp things." Swimming, bowling, arts and crafts, playdates, etc.
I'm sure I'll be exhausted by September

My kids go to hockey camp, but that's it. I'm off in the summer and I like having no schedule.

Re: Anyone NOT do summer camp or similar program?
Don't feel bad. Growing up, my parents sent my sister and I to camp (we are 9 year apart so we weren't there at he same time). I won't say I hated it, but I much rather stayed at home with my mom and my cousins and play. After a few summers of fighting with me, my mom said this is ridiculous. We are paying so much money and she doesn't want to go. So I stopped. And I was the happiest kid ever.
My sister loved camp. She went for 10 years and then was a counselor for 4. Each kid is different. Trust me you are not depriving them.

Yes! This is us! I play camp counselor all Summer to my two kids. We do A LOT!!! This year my DD is doing a week of day camp for Girl Scouts and a week of horseback riding day camp. Her friends are going to both, so I know she will have a blast. And they were both very inexpensive!

And I feel guilty about sending them to camp all day ........ Even though I know they will have a great time.
I think if they are with their cousins and have other kids to play with, it's great !! At least my kids, all they really want, no matter where they are, is to have other kids around to play with -

I give you A LOT of credit as my middle/high schoolers are basically done (just tests) and they are driving me NUTS already and I work lol.

If they have kids to play with, keep them home! My kids have to go to camp, no one stays home so they have no one to play with.

Re: Anyone NOT do summer camp or similar program?
I send my son to camp last year for a few weeks because I didn't want to entertain him all day . This year i have no choice because I started working, so he will have to go because I don't have any one to watch him. My sister has a sitter who watches her kids for the summer. My sons camp is through the YMCA so it's not as costly as other camps, thanks god! But still $$$!
To me I feel like camp is only "Must" if you don't have some one to watch your kids or you want to give them something to do, and save your sanity. But I don't think a kid is being deprived if they don't go!

I usually send DD to summer camp but won't this year. We will be taking off a few weeks during the summer and doing day trips, Hershey park, etc. One week I'm also going to put her in cheer camp. The rest of the time she will be with her sitter/nanny who has been watching her since she was 4 months old. She takes her to the spray park and on tons of playdates.

Re: Anyone NOT do summer camp or similar program?
I'm a SAHM and we don't do camp. I don't feel badly about it at all. We keep extremely busy. Beach, pool, play dates, movies, bowling, theme parks, water parks/sprinkler parks. You name it and we do it. Even on our occasional lazy - stay in pajamas all day and bake and watch movies I don't feel bad. Sometimes they like those days best
I live all school year for these few weeks with them
