Birthday Party Dilemma.. Please advise!!!
Hello everyone
I just recently moved to Long Island and I'm living in a house for the first time so I'm not very familiar with the customs between neighbors. In Astoria buildings you can live next to the same person for years and don't even know their name.
So here is my question.. My friend is having her son's first birthday party in my backyard. She has a small budget and was having a hard time renting a place for the party.
Should I invite my neighbors kids?? I feel bad having a party and not inviting them even tho is not even my party. They now I only have a 2 month old daughter. At the same time they'll be 4 adults + 6 kids and I now my friend's budget is thigh and she doesn't even know them.
I don't want to seam rude or make their kids feel bad. What's should I do?? Please advise!

ask your friend first. im sure its no big deal. perhaps you can invite your neighbors last minute as it really isnt your party. "my friend is throwing a party for her kid, youre more than welcome to join us tomorrow, this afternoon" etc and you do NOT have to invite your neighbors over every time you have a gathering.

You're very sweet, but I wouldn't even think of inviting my neighbors, unless I was very close with them.

Re: Birthday Party Dilemma.. Please advise!!!
I don't think you have to. We are friendly with our neighbors, but the kids are different ages. We'll usually say something like... we're having some people over if you want to stop over for a drink or if the kids want to go swimming. Their kids are in sleep away camp all summer so don't have to worry about that. We also have new neighbors and their kids are closer in age to ours. I didn't invite them over for my DS's birthday bc we don't see them so much, but when we have seen them we asked if they'd like to come over. The second time we asked they were free and did take us up on the offer to stop over for some wine and desserts for the kids. After all that said I don't think it's necessary. You can invite them over a separate time to get to know them. This isn't your party to really invite others over. If you do want to then you should offer some money to your friend.

I agree with your choice, maybe down the road for your child's party, but I certainly would not for someone else's party.

Even though it's not "your party" it is since its in your backyard. Personally I'd invite the neighbors but offer to pay your friend (just pitch in) for their food/beverages.
Having good relations with the neighbors is key if you're in a jam. This is is a good way to start.

Would never even occur to me to invite my neighbors to a kids party where they don't know the people having the party. Why would they want to come?
I think you're fine, especially since you said you don't really know them well

We talk to our neighbors but we never invite each other to bbqs or parties. It's not expected and a little awkward since you don't talk to them and its not your party.

I wouldn't. And if my neighbors invited me to something like that I wouldn't want to go.

I wouldn't either. I've been invited many times and I always politely decline. Want to keep boundaries. We keep to ourselves.
