Do you have a vacation home?

If so, where is it, how often do you use it, and how much was it?

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

Yes, but it's the reverse of what most people have. We live year round in a place that has a lot of vacation homes. So our vacation home is a 1 bedroom apartment in midtown Manhattan.
We use it about once a month.

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

DH's parents have one in Lake George. We're lucky enough o be able to use it as much as we want.
In the summer we use it almost every other weekend. In the winter we use it maybe twice.
We love it so much that if they ever considered selling it we would absolutely purchase our own vacation home up there.

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

We are considering getting one upstate. May wait 2 more years to be done paying daycare. I am from the Lake George area, and two of my brothers have vacation homes on Loon lake, so I would like to get one there too, with the intention of it being my summer retirement home, and be near my family.

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

I have a house in Palm Beach FL. Love it.

Nothing better than going down in the winter when it's freezing up here and I can walk around down there in shorts.

Do you have a vacation home?

We have a townhouse in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. We go down during all the school breaks. DH takes our two older sons down in March for spring training baseball games. I go down in October with my friends for a girls' weekend.

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

This is something I've been asking DH for for years now. I really want something within 2 hours if home. It doesn't need to be fancy. I just want something 2-3 bedrooms and either on or near a lake. Also close enough to golf courses and within an hour of skiing. I would like to stay around $150,000. DH is not sold on the idea. He doesn't really want a second property to maintain. Chat Icon

You should show him the pics of my flip house! Not much to maintain, amazing CLEAN freshwater lake and tons of activities for kids and adults! 60 min from NYC and close to your budget!

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

not me, but my parents own a place in Myrtle Beach. It was a new construction and they bought at the height of the market, so if they sold it today, they probably wouldnt get what they paid. My parents go 1x a year, DH and I go 1-2x a year. if it were closer i'd def go there more. Another thing is they don't rent it out (you could rent to vacationers but they end up destroying the place so they choose not to) which has caused problems for them from people asking them to use it all the time (and my mom is too nice to not ask for any money).

Your place is beautiful, but he would definitely not want to deal with driving out to the island all the time. Traffic sucks and we live in Westchester.

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

We have a house in Martha's Vineyard. It's a condo so it's easy to maintain. We rent it out when we are not using it. We use it about 5 weeks per year. I love it and wish I could spend the entire summer up there, but I do get to go for the month of August and that is awesome!

I would like to get a ski house next. I used to own a ski house near Mount Snow and it is much more economical than a beach house. It's more of a year round destination. I would like to get another ski home at some point just can't decide where.

Yes, upstate. It's my childhood home , so it didn't cost anything to buy. The taxes are a killer, so is maintenance. We have a family friend that mows the lawn and keeps an eye on the house for us. We pay him to do this. Oil in the winter, recently had to replace the furnace, always doing updates, whether it's cosmetic or necessity.

For the amount of time we're able to go up it's becoming a financial burden, but emotions are what keep me doing it.

I think unless you have a condo situation where it's not a full property to maintain, you'll be able to enjoy it more.

My SIL has 2 properties in FL. They're condo/villas around Disney area. They do not rent them out, but allow family & friends to stay. Even though they're not responsible for the outside, if something goes wrong inside they need to hop on a plane & get it fixed.

Re: Do you have a vacation home?

We just got a boat and we stay on it every weekend and take trips with it, and will bring it to Florida in November. So its kinda like a 2nd home.
Its 3 beds 2 baths so there's plenty of room

We have a house on shelter island. I stay here all summer, and some holidays/long weekends during the year. We don't use it as many weekends as I would like -as the kids have gotten older it is harder to get away during the school year.
