How sad and tragic. And how despicable that as an advanced society parents still have to make these kinds of choices to find affordable child care. Having to return to work at 3 months is bad enough but having to place your child somewhere like this just so you can afford it, and then to have this result is not acceptable. We need to do better for our children and families.
You're so right. I was "lucky" I was able to take a whole 4 months of maternity bc it was December and my company let me use my vacay and come back after New Years.
Honestly that extra month was so wonderful. I couldn't imagine leaving her at 3mos but by 4mos I felt she was a tiny bit older. I sobbed the whole way to work after dropping her off FURIOUS at my job and the government and how in Europe you get a year. Paid in full usually.
This is such a tragic story. I cannot imagine this happening any day but on his FIRST day. It's something that's hard to articulate.

I would kill to have 3 months. It's ridiculous.
I wonder if they knew the daycare was unlicensed.

NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
Whether you are licensed or not, if you are watching people's kids you should know CPR. This is so sad.probably not the day care providers fault but such sad story all around

Beyond heartbreaking
The unlicensed part really just adds insult to injury, so to speak. Could have happened to anyone, anywhere. For all we know, had the mom stayed home one more day, it would have happened to her. Just awful, all the way around.
This is what I was going to say...while I do 100% feel that being licensed is important, the outcome could have been the same with the mom or in the care of somewhere else. In the 14 years of operating I doubt anything like this ever happened. A similar story just occurred near me in MD...but the baby died in the care of a nanny, passes away from SIDS during his nap. It happens and even with proper precautions (sleeping on the back, no bumpers etc..) it still happens.
The story is just so sad.

Sounds like SIDS but what stood out ro me was them having to talk her through CPR over the phone. If they had been licensed everyone there would have to vebe cpr certified and recertification often.
This was certainly my first thought too. But after thinking about it sometimes people panic when the real thing happens. I have been certified for over 15 years and just took my update 6 weeks ago, I like to think I would do it perfect in an emergency, but who knows (I pray that I never have to find out). Either way I would welcome being talked through it by 911.
Licensed or not this is a tragedy and a parent's worst nightmare. I do hope that this was just a fluke thing and has nothing to do with something the daycare did or did not do.

This is just so incredibly tragic. As for needing to be walked through CPR, many people want that reasurance. I wonder if day cares should have an AED on site in addition to being trained in CPR.

This is exactly what I thought while reading it.
So sad and tragic prayers for that family.
An infant died from SIDS while napping at the daycare my son went to when he was young. It was tragic.

How sad. My first thought is SIDS but obviously that has yet to be determined. I never understand why people would go with an unlicensed daycare.
We know people who prefer in home daycares with very few children. I doubt they are licensed. They like the home feel of it.
This story is so sad. Worst nightmare ever.

I'm sorry but don't you have to be licensed by law? Even in home daycares? I am sure if you are caught with a daycare and no license you can get in some hefty trouble.

Not sure if this is what you are saying but not all in home daycares are unlicensed. We use a great one that is most definitely licensed, inspected, and regulated by OCFS. And it has no violations whereas some big and popular centers do.

Yes, I was going to say- I thought ALL daycares had to be licensed. I know several home day cares in my area and they are licensed, just like a center. I really think that it's a law and that if you are running any kind of unlicensed daycare you can get shut down.

According to OCFS- any day care program planning to serve three or more children for more than 3 hours a day on a regular basis must obtain a license or registration certificate.

Don't people say all the time on here when someone wants to stay home with their kids "oh why don't you watch some other kids and make some money that way"?
I'm sure those people aren't licensed.

If you are babysitting one kid it's not the same as a daycare.

This daycare went by a name and everything so I don't think that happened in this case but you bring up a good point. I'm curious how many kids this facility had.

This was not that kind of scenario though. One article I read said there were 15 children there which is more than a licensed day care is allowed.

In ny a Group daycare are allowed up to 16 children if they have the correct teacher ratio. She had 2 other adults with her so she would have been allowed 16.

It's protocol. It doesn't matter if that was a doctor on the other end you go through the card word for word. It's the protection for the communication center to prevent being sued. It never said she didn't know CPR.
So sad and a parents worst nightmare.

NY Infant Dies on 1st Day at Allegedly Unlicensed Day Care Center-
I personally think that likely this wasn't their fault. A piece of paper doesn't stop a baby from dying of SIDS.

How sad. My first thought is SIDS but obviously that has yet to be determined. I never understand why people would go with an unlicensed daycare.
most likely people do because of money. sending kids to a licensed daycare is a lot of money. I have 2 in full time and I pay over $25K a year for them to go there!
if the parents trusted the place I don't think it really matters if they were licensed or not. what's the difference from this place and finding a nanny or someone out of their house to watch your kids that you trust? also just because a daycare is licensed doesn't mean that they will follow all the procedures correctly.
Now if they lied to the parents saying they were licensed I would be fuming mad that I was lied too.
until the say cause of death I don't think them not having a license really matters esp if it was SIDS it could have happened at anytime at any place.
This is how I feel. I don't use daycare, but if I did- I'd make sure it was properly licensed. I could see how someone would just go with someone they trust or not even think to question the licensing knowing they've been in business for so long.
