I'm thinking of leaving my insane corporate job and go back to school full time for a masters in education for teaching.

Has anyone done this?

If so, what was your experience? Where did you go to school? What is your experience finding a job?

Thanks so much in advance! any and all feedback is appreciated!

I personally think you'd be making a BIG mistake doing this. It's next to impossible to get a job on Long Island and it's not even so easy anymore in the NYC schools, especially in the borough of Queens. IF you do decide on this path, I'd stick with either Secondary Math or Science, ESL, or possibly Library Science. Good luck in your decision, it's truly disheartening now being a teacher anywhere with the up-and-coming changes.

I don't want to agree with this, but I have to. I hate to dissuade people from following their dreams and pursuing what they are passionate about, but I think it's a bad idea. I've been teaching for 8 years and was so incredibly fortunate to land a teaching job in a great district here on LI right out of graduate school, but I have friends who I graduated with that are still looking for a teaching job. Some are permanent subs, some are per diem subs, some took incredibly low paying jobs at private/religious schools, and some have just given up and left the field. There are so few jobs. We had a .6 (teaches 3 periods a day) open up in my high school for the upcoming school year in my department. I sat on the interview committee and screened resumes. We received over 1100 applications for that one part-time position. Very sad and disheartening. If it were me, I would stay with my corporate job rather than racking up student loans to get a degree in a field with such limited employment.

Thank you for your honest feedback. what I didnt mention is that we are thinking of moving to FL in the next year while I would be in school and we iron out the details of the move. I'm not sure what the market there is like.....that's a whole other post!
My friends that are teachers here and struggling with layoffs and finding jobs, it's very concerning and it's such a shame.

My cousin had two jobs in six months down in FL, but they were both at charter schools.

It is very different down there than it is here.

Re: Has anyone left Corp America and went to become a teacher?

From what I've heard too, the teacher salary in the south is also really low and many of their schools are no where as good as some of our districts people turn their nose up on ;).

Maybe you can wait till you get there, do some follow up and then make a decision....

Would you even need your masters to teach in Florida?

If you haven't already done so, I would look at their state website to see what the qualifications are. You may not need a master's, if it's just a few classes for certification that might be a good place to start before committing time and money to a master's program.

Also see if there are any programs for career changers, for example NYC has the Teaching Fellows which is for people like you. I am pretty sure they get/got their degrees paid for and were helped with job placement.

Finally, see what areas are most in demand. For example ESL is probably going to be more in demand than something like secondary social studies which is a popular area, or it was when I started out.

NY is one of the only states that requires a masters. Other states won't hire you with a masters because they'd need to pay you more than someone with a bachelor's.

I have to agree with previous posters...don't do it.

Everything I have heard is that it is not worth it because the job market is so saturated that its so hard to find a job...

I know someone who tried to do this and it's been 8 years and still no teaching job.
She's back to working in her old field, out a lot of money and time spent getting her teaching degrees.

There really are no teaching jobs on LI. It's nearly impossible to get one.

Speaking as a former teacher, if you plan on staying on LI I wouldn't bother. Not only is it difficult to even get a teaching job on the island, keeping it is equally as hard. I spent YEARS trying to get a teaching job on the island while I was teaching in Queens and it's just impossible, SO few jobs and SO many applicants. If I could go back, as much I as loved teaching, I wouldn't have wasted the money on my Masters in Education.

ETA - Even if you move to FL, just realize that depending where you are many of the schools aren't great and the salary is quite low, ESPECIALLY compared to here on the island. But if you're okay with that and this is your passion, go for it. Nothing worse than regrets!! Good luck!! Chat Icon

If you're staying on LI, it'd probably not in your best interest to go this route. As mentioned, there is basically zero demand for teachers on Long Island right now.

If you're moving to FL, you don't need a master's degree. Heck, you probably don't even need a degree in education to start out in some areas. The salary for teachers in Florida is a "teachers salary", meaning it's low, not like the salaries up here.

Re: Has anyone left Corp America and went to become a teacher?

I have a friend who is going through the same dilemma, and I hate when I see people discouraging her! (even though it is often coming from a "I'm trying to save you some heartache" place) Is it super hard right now in NY, and possibly also in FL? Probably. Most definitely.

But if its something that in your heart you KNOW is the right career path for you, then you should do it. Rarely is something worth doing easy.

A good alternative may be teaching at a university? I'm an accountant but went for teaching and decided to change my major. I still love the idea of it and would love to teach an accounting class here or there eventually.

Maybe a suggestion in case you are interested in working with kids but not teaching- my son is special needs and there is always a high demand for therapists such as ABA therapists and Occupational Therapy. In fact he was on a waiting list for OT for 4 months because they couldn't find an available OT. I think what is appealing is that you can work for a school, or you can work for an agency.. through Early Intervention, before he was receiving services at a school, my son was getting therapy at home and those therapists pretty much take whatever case works for them time wise.

My last two hires (corporate world) were people who tried to get teaching jobs and couldn't. One person did the sub/leave replacement dance for 6 years. And she is great- she said she lost every job to nepotism.

If you are moving Oos then it's possible, but if you stay don't do it.

From what I've read you don't need a masters in FL, but then again they don't make what teachers make here either.
I work an insane amount of hours now and I had switched my major to business in my junior year of my bachelors and I've always regretted it-more so now that I have kids entering elementary school and dealing with all the scheduling conflicts. Once I deduct for the babysitting coverage for all the vacations schools have and then summer camp, my salary is low anyway. It's not worth it for the hours that I pull. Sorry for the vent!

Thank you for all of your insight!

A few of my colleagues left the corporate world to become a teacher (high profile/high pressure jobs) and say it's just as insane if not more so.

Teaching isn't the cushy job everyone seems to think it is.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't think its cushy at all. It's something I've wanted to pursue for a long time and I'm finally at the point it would make sense to do it.

Re: Has anyone left Corp America and went to become a teacher?

I'll be the odd one out and say go for it. My colleague at work did exactly this and she is so much happier for it. I am a teacher and I love my job. It doesn't feel like a job to me, it simply feels like what I was meant to do. It is so extremely satisfying working with children, and their parents, to help them reach their best potential. This is not to say that my job can't be stressful, any job can be stressful, but I never wake up and dread going to work. Having 2 months off with my kids is the icing on the cake. I encourage you to do your homework and look into the teaching field in FL to figure out job demand and salary. But if you feel like you regret changing your major then it's not too late to change your mind and go back. Good luck with your decision!

This is good advice.

My field has changed a lot over the past decade and finding jobs are not as easy.

As long as you go into it though with realistic expectations, you should be okay.

It's also very easy to see the grass as greener.

Sometimes it's just a better work-personal life balance that doesn't have to come with teaching.

My husband left the corporate world and did the teaching fellows program. Yes, he would love to teach on long island, but that's near impossible. But he teaches in he city, and has never regretted his decision. He was so miserable in the corporate world and loves being able to teach now.

As a side note, if you get your masters in a subject (not in education) you can teach at the community college level.

Do you dread going to work each day? If so, I would try to make the switch. Can you work and go to school at the same time? I don't know many teachers that dread going to work everyday. I know many people in corporate literally sick every day because of what they have to deal with on the daily. Chat Icon
