Reduction ?

Sorry for the sensitive topic but I have an inquiry and I thought maybe you girls may be able to help me. I'm doing IUI tomorrow and today I was told that I have many eggs "ready to go". The chances of me having more than two babies is high and I was advised to prepare myself to do a reduction. I'm looking for girls advice on if they did this with triplets or more and if they did what I should expect. I would take 6 babies at once if I knew they'd all be healthy and I wouldn't be on bed rest. I would be doing this only for health and the other babies. Thanks!

ETA: We went ahead and I'm now 10 weeks pregnant with 1 baby!!!

Re: Reduction ?

Stumbled upon this post by accident but felt the need to offer my two cents. No, I have no experience with this but what I DO know and what I hope your fertility office explained to you is that reducing a baby puts ALL at risk. As someone who has done treatments over many years, my very best advice is to only go through with the procedure if you're comfortable with the potential outcome. If there's the potential for quads which you've decided you won't want to carry, cancel the cycle. It's much easier to cancel the cycle and redo with a more conservative approach, than be faced with high order multiples or selective reduction.

Eta: I'm sorry but any doctor advising you to "prepare for a reduction" prior to performing an IUI is not handling your case responsibly.

Re: Reduction ?

I am surprised the Dr. is going through with the IUI if they think it will lead to a high order multiple pregnancy.

I had an IUI and multiple eggs available and now I have twins but I am lucky that I did not have to make any reduction decisions. I don't know if I could have done that.

Good luck to you!

I agree with this! I had two follies with my IUI cycle and my dr spoke to me about possiblity of a multiple pregnancy and possible reduction if I were to have a three or more pregnancy. He explained to me all the risks and said ultimately it's my decision but he was educating us on the possibilities that we faced. We went through with the cycle. I wound up pregnant with triplets (one egg split). Baby C they were unsure would make it. I started seeing a high risk dr and was to do an amino and DH and I were to be faced with the decision of a reduction or go through with the pregnancy of triplets. we didn't have to make that decision because at 10 weeks we lost baby C and didn't have to do the amnio but DH and I spoke about it and we were having a hard time deciding on what to do. Part of me didn't want to do the amnio and just wanted to go through with the pregnancy and part of me wanted to do what my high risk was telling me because I was already having pregnancy issues. There were risks to carrying all three and there were risks to doing the amnio and risks to the reduction. We were prepared for twins but were not prepared to hear there were three even though our dr spoke to us about eggs splitting. And even though we didn't have to make any decisions, while talking it over with DH before losing baby c, it was the hardest decision we had to think about. We had twins and 11 months later were pg again. We swear til this day that our youngest is that triplet. If you could possibly face a multiple pregnancy and you know for sure you don't want to carry multiples then cancel the cycle and try again next month. Your dr should have explained the risks of everything if you were to get pregnant with more than 1 and the risks of a possible reduction. Not telling you to "prepare for a reduction". He should be educating you on every possible outcome and letting you make your decision.

I see now I probably didn't word my original post correctly. My doctor did educate me. But ultimately it was my decision and I decided that I am willing to take the chance and see what happens. I did more research on my own and found that even though I may have multiples I also may only have one and at this point in my life I couldn't walk away from the chance to have my take home baby. If I could carry 10 babies and all including me be healthy I would. If I should need to reduce I understand the risk to the others but I also know it would be a decision to hopefully help the others do better.
It's done now so we shall see. Thanks for the feedback.

Reduction ?

I had an IUI done with 5 large follicles, we just found out we are pregnant with twins! They did tell us about the risks and the chance for multiples. I went with my gut and just decided that whatever the outcome was we would make the decision if it came to it.

I saw just go with the flow. I am not sure if this is your first IUI or not but one just never knows what can or will happen.
I got pregnant after my 5th IVF cycle. I know friends who have done IUI cycles in double digits and sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Sending you lots of luck. Just listen to Dr., think about it all, but just relax so that everyone can meet the way they should
