How long have you been "infertile.."
was a question the nurse at RMA asked me yesterday when we were discussing whether to do ICSI or not.
I was taken back a bit b/c i've never considered myself to be "infertile" and all my tests (HSG, hysteroscopy, bloodwork, ultrasounds,) have come back perfect. I have a DS so I know I can get pregnant and carry a child. DH has super high sperm counts and no problems there. SO i never considered us to be "infertile.." just needing some help I guess.
Me and DH looked at each other like..uhh...what??
But then she rephrased it and was like well how long have you been trying. almost a year now, but Im 36. She told me at my age eggs tend to get harder on the outside and harder to fertilize. So ICSI was recommended. which we will do.
But it was like she punched me in the face when she said it that way.

Re: How long have you been "infertile.."
I'm sorry! I think for them it's so routine, she probably didn't even think about the implications for you. Sometimes something comes out of left field and it's tough to deal with. I remember when I had to call my insurance company to get authorization for infertility treatments and they asked if a doctor had diagnosed me as infertile. Of course I said yes because I was seeing an RE and about to do IVF but no one had ever put it so bluntly like that. It was tough.

I would have been taken back by that statement too. I am glad she rephrased it. She probably won't be saying that too much again!

Re: How long have you been "infertile.."
Weird way for her to ask that question.
I personally wouldn't know how to answer that. I'm 36, TTC for almost 3 years...no prior pregnancies ever. How long have I been infertile? Who knows? Possible since my first period ever but who can tell at this point?

Re: How long have you been "infertile.."
thats a crappy way to put it. Does everyone's eggs get harder as they get older?

How long have you been
That's a blunt way to put it, sorry. I hope she doesn't keep doing that.
