Removing gel polish
What's the best way to remove gel polish at home? Last time I had gel a few yrs ago, removed it at home and it destroyed my nails. I did the acetone/foil thing. What else should I be doing, or should I just go to the salon?

Re: Removing gel polish
It's a crapshoot. Sometimes I use the acetone/foil at home and it works, last time I couldn't get it off to save my life. It was awful . If you go to the salon they will just soak you in a bowl of acetone and scrape it as it starts to flake. You can try that. Use aquafor or Vaseline on your cuticles before you soak to protect them

Removing gel polish
put a bowl of acetone nail polish remover over a bowl of hot water (like a double boiler) and soak, the hot water helps activate the acetone

Re: Removing gel polish
CVS makes a foil kit, but I didnt have much luck.
the salon I go to, wets a small piece of cotton with acetone, puts it on the nail and wraps in foil. you have to let it sit for a good 8-10 min. the gel polish should mostly peel up at that point. the girl uses the other end of a cuticle pusher tool (the rounder end) to scrape it off, but it comes off pretty easily if you've soaked it long enough.
she usually roughs up the surface with a buffer or nail file FIRST before putting the cotton/acetone on.

I haven't tried this product yet but it seems like it would be really great.

I think the key is roughing them up first -- so you take off the layer on top that is really what sets them.

Agree with this. File them on top first and then add the soaked cotton.

Yeah, as much as i LOVE not having to worry about chips in 2 days, it's such a royal PIA to get off and my nails always seem wrecked afterwards that I only do it for long vacations now

I'm a nail technician, and this is what we do. You only need to buff the surface of the nail to break the seal if it's gel polish like OPI or Gelish. If its CND Shellac no need to break the seal. If you take a small thin piece of cotton and really soak it in 100% acetone and wrap in tin foil for 5-10 minutes it should flake off with the pusher.
GEL Polish/Shellac disclaimer I give to everyone.... DONT PEEL THE GEL off your nails, thats how the nail plate gets damaged and ruined. Layers of your nail will come up along with the polish. Using cuticle oil on them daily will help gel polish removal and upkeep.

Re: Removing gel polish
I just peel it off even though it ruins my nails I just don't care
Am I the only one whose gel doesn't last more than a week before they start to peel? I feel like my nails repel nail polish I use to get tips till gel came along in hopes it would last two weeks before chipping no such luck

If your nails are in bad condition (like from peeling off gel manicures ) the gel polish won't last as long

so basically my laziness of not wanting to soak my nails is causing this!
now I have to decide which one I rather deal with sitting and soaking or just dealing with the chips early on

LOL. I try to take breaks from gel manis. I just deal with the PIA of regular polish chipping on day 2 for a few months and give my nails a chance to get back in shape
