Leaving child in car?

Please let me know if you disagree.

My mother was watching my 3 year old yesterday morning ...did some errands with her then drove over to camp/school to pick up my 5 year old son. My DD fell asleep in the car so my mother decides to leave the car running with AC and locks the car with my daughter sleeping in the car seat. She said she parked right in front of the school and ran in to get him. My mother is 70 ...she has not run in ages and had to walk down a long hall and turn a corner to pick him up at the classroom.

Do you think it was wrong what she did? She said she can't carry my daughter, did not have a stroller and did not want to wake my daughter. In my mind, if I did this I would get caught for leaving a child unattended.

I'm probably going to be in the minority, but what I think she did was fine. Your mom was gone probably no more than 30 seconds and considering the location, risk was minimal.

What are your concerns? That your daughter could have been abducted or the potential legal implications?

Considering the above, I think your mom did what she thought was best. I would not be happy about it but I wouldn't hold a grudge either.

Yes, she felt she was doing what she felt was best at the time but it was more than 30 seconds ... more like 5 -8 minutes. I usually do this pick up 5 days a week.

I agree - I have done much the same thing (remote start to keep car running, but it's locked and I have the keys). It has been to run into the ATM, pay cash for gas, return a movie to Redbox. Not more than 5 min, and i try to (when possible) keep the car in sight. I don't do it EVERYDAY, but when needed - DS is 8 and DD is almost 3. Those less than 5 min things would easily take me 15+ minutes and probably cost me $.

Re: Leaving child in car?

Since it is already done, there is not much you can do about it but personally I would not be very happy about that.

The child is old enough to walk so I would have woken her as you said she walked down a hallway and around a corner. It was not like she had her in her sight the entire time.

Leaving child in car?

I have only ever done it with my car in sight (gas station has been only time actually) so I too would feel really uneasy that she was in a building and down a hallway while the child was in the car.

I wouldn't agree with the statement "considering location risk was minimal" either because just the other day at my daughter's camp where there's a million of us mom's and kids around in and outside at all times one of the moms car windows was smashed, glass everywhere and pocketbook taken...what's to stop someone from trying to steal a child, a valuable,...the car.

Car accidents happen all the time, but yet you still choose to drive with your child, right?

The risk of your child being injured or killed in a car accident is much, much higher than the risk of your child being abducted. Are you never going to drive anywhere with your child in the vehicle?

And yes, the risk of theft if high, much higher than child abduction (especially by strangers), so it would be wise not to leave a purse within plain site.

Just spoke to a school nurse and law enforcement ... you can get arrested for doing what she did. Someone forwarded me an article about a man who video taped from his phone a woman leaving her son in the car to run into a store ...she was gone maybe 5 minutes ...he took her plate number and next day and later than night the cops were at her door. This is what society is today .... you shoud see the responses to my post on the Parenting site ....there are women who would go ape sh*t if their parents did this to their kids.

Arrested? In NY? I can't seem to find a specific NY state law regarding leaving a child unsupervised in a vehicle. I know there was a push for it, but I didn't know if it completely passed yet. And like other states' laws, it's subject to interpretation. It comes down to the child endangerment.

NY State Bill

Most of these laws were put in place because of how hot or cold a vehicle could get when a child is left in a vehicle for any substantial amount of time. It's about the risk of endangerment. I don't know where the OP's children go to school or what the surrounding area is like, but if the amount of time was minimal, I find it hard to believe a cop would have much of a case for arrest.

And I think I know the case you're speaking of. The mom ran into a store to purchase headphones for son prior to a flight, correct?

Yup, in NY. The neglect statute covers it.

I would be VERY pissed. I would have wanted her to wake her up if that was the case. But I don't even do it with my kids so I sure as heck wouldnt want someone else to do it. Especially since you said the car was out of sight for her and she had to actually go into the school and to his classroom. If she was picking him up at the front door and the car was just in the parking lot - fine. But I wouldnt be ok with her leaving the child in parking lot while she was gone for 5 minutes. My dd is 3 and all I can think about is even if she just woke up and was alone in the car she would have been so scared and upset!

Re: Leaving child in car?

I would be upset over this. For your mom, I think keeping a stroller in the car is a good idea. I understand that a 3 year old is heavy to carry so if she can put a child in a stroller quickly, that would be best.

Re: Leaving child in car?

I personally don't see an issue with this. Car was running and locked, keys were with her, and she was parked right in front of the school. It was minimal time.

Leaving child in car?

i would have been very annoyed. another option could have been for your mom to call the school and ask them to bring your child to the door.

I would have been upset. Running and waiting at the school's front door is one thing, but entering the school & going down the hallway where the car is out of sight for 5+ minutes is a no-no for me (and I like to think that I'm pretty laid back). That being said, done is done & I wouldn't hold onto the anger - I'd just let her know how you feel and ask that a stroller be kept in the car at all times for situations such as these.
