Self contained class

DS was in an inclusion class last year for kindergarten, now he is in a self contained class for kindergarten. Anyone have a situation like this? Did they ever get out of self contained class. What put them there in the first place. He just got his first HW assignment tonight and I feel it is way beneath his skill level.

Self contained class

I wouldn't worry to much about the first two weeks of HW. They are just testing the waters to see what the kids know and don't know. The plus of a self contained class is that they can modify the work to whatever level your child is at.

Children are placing in self contained classes for a multitude of reasons but mainly because they need a smaller class size to be successful academically with more supports than a General Education class can provide.

DD was in an 8:1:1 in Kindergarten and moved up to a 12:1:1 then half day mainstreaming and now in third grade she is fully mainstreamed in a gen ed classroom.

Re: Self contained class

What did they tell you last year at his annual review meeting? Are you sure he is repeating a Kindergarten or is he in a mixed grade level class as a 1st grade student. Re read his IEP.

I indicated he is in kindergarten this year in a self contained class ...why are you asking me if I know whether my son is in first grade or kindergarten? As his mother, I know. He is repeating kindergarten.....Chat Icon

The reason she is asking is because when you are in a self contained class, it really does not matter what grade you are in. You are grouped by ages and even though you may think he is repeating K, they may have never made that change on his official records. It may still say first. It was a piece of helpful advice on something to double check as it can cause an issue later down the road. No need to be defensive about it.

Well they do not have that out here where we are. I am not being defensive ... I know what grade my child is in. I understand she was trying to be all helpful and nice but sometimes people reference only what they know or experience and think everyone else has the same system. My husband and I physically go to these meetings and we walk through the IEP ... I then explain it to the neurologist and developmental pediatrician. I just get frustrated because there are many posters who glance over a post and think they have the best answer ....they try to be nice.

My question which she never answered was has anyone had a child move on and get out of self contained into a collaborative class. What things qualified their kid to be in a self contained class. He is my first and this is life I am supposed to be guiding... Forget it ...this is why I am joining SEPTA through my son's district ...thanks for your time

YOU have the right to move your child to the least restrictive environment. I would call a meeting, and explain that his current class is too restrictive, there are not enough positive role models, and you would like to look into an inclusion class. Good luck

Re: Self contained class

My child has been in a self contained class since Kindergarten. He is in what another poster referred to as a multigrade class, but if he was typical, he would be in 3rd grade. I had a hard time with it at first because I thought the goal for us was to get him into a less restrictive environment. As time went on, I realized that he is in the best setting for him right now.

In answer to your question of why he was recommended for the self contained class, he has some behaviors that prevent him from being in a larger class setting with typical kids. He also needs a lot of redirection to keep him on task to do schoolwork and stay seated during group lessons. He's bright and his work is tailored for him. If you think the work is too easy, talk to the teacher about it. Keep in mind, though, that the first couple of weeks, they are given easy assignments to help ease the transition to the new school year and get a sense of what they know and don't know.

If you aren't sure why they placed him in the self contained class, ask them. You should know what criteria were considered for placement.

Feel free to FM me if you have more specific questions. It's hard to know sometimes how much more to demand and when to trust that the staff knows what they are doing. Chat Icon

Self contained class

In the district I worked in, we had a few children who transitioned from a self contained setting to an inclusion setting. These are primarily children with Autism, Asperger's, and PDD-NOS in the classes in our building.
