I think we did this exact thread with the same question and reasoning a year or two ago. I don't recall it turning out well.

Can we all stop judging how and why people spend their money? Pocketbooks aren't meant to be transparent.

Also - heating costs are insane if you have oil. Even if properly budgeted. Electric is crazy high and PSEG is looking to raise rates yet again

No one gets a gold star or medal for doing everything right financially. If you are in a good place, awesome. If you do absolutely nothing fun just to save for utilities, that must suck but if you're cool with it, that's fine. If you get resentful, then move and have fun with more disposable income. Not directed at OP but just in general.

Overall LI is crazy expensive.

Here's a helpful response without judgement: For anyone struggling , please look into REAP and HEAP and see if you qualify. Depending in several factors, you could get help for heat and electric. I would venture to say many qualify but few would think to apply.

I know this is not just to me since I started the poll but I am really just commenting as the other poll showed that many people make decent money and when these questions are asked about necessities, many have complaints about how much they cost.
LI IS expensive, I will totally agree with that. Try living on much less than $100,000 total household salary.

For us, it's not about not being to afford the oil. It just kills me to pay it! I can't get gas here yet (long story) so we are stuck with oil for a while. We don't have little kids so we CAN wait as long as possible.

It's just the point for us. Not that we can't $$ it

I think a lot of people feel the same

It kills me to pay a lot of things that are overly expensive so I get that lol.
That is life though and this is a necessity as long as you live where there is cold weather Chat Icon

We have gas so in the warmer months it is about $35 a month and in the cooler months it varies from $150-$200 a month

It all depends on how much oil costs.

Last year a fill up was about $1100. Times 3?

This year I am at a cap of $2.90? so much less than $1100.

If I'm cold I turn the heat on and give no thought to cost.

So far so good this season. Filled up at 1.73 last week!

How the FLUCK did you get that rate??????

I prefer to bundle up (throw on a sweatshirt and such) before turning on the heat. I find it drying and I really don't like having it on except when I HAVE to.

That being said - our house, although recently renovated, is drafty so it gets cold even with the heat on when it's really cold.

This. I recently switched to gas. Could I have stuck with oil and still paid my bills sure but why not save some money where you can. I try not to turn the heat on til it really needed. There is no need for the heat if all I need to do is throw on a sweatshirt. IF its downright cold I'll put it on whenever but I see no need for a little chill.

Exactly.. My family isn't dying of pheumonia or anything but if we can avoid a $200 bill and put some clothes on, then that's what we will do!

$330 for a night in a indoor water park I can justify, a 300+ electric bill in October, nope! But that's me - Lol, plus the heat in my house makes the temp go from Antartica cold to Africa Hot. I hate all electric & PSE&G.

Eta: I can't switch because I live in a Condo. But I'm just explaining why I'm cheap with putting the heat on!

Re: Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

I have no idea what we pay. You don't find out what you pay exactly until about a year or two after you first start renting. You pay a set amount per month and then you get a bill (or refund) depending on what you use. We've only been here a year and a half and we are currently waiting on our utilities bill from 2014 (we expect a refund because we turned the heat on maybe 15-20 times last winter).

We have gas floor heating. We don't turn it on much. The insulation is so good here that we don't have to turn the heating on often. We are in the middle so that helps.

So you don't have a contract for your Oil burner correct?

No, because we have a fairly new burner.

But you can get a oil burner service contract without having to get an oil contract. The people that deliver oil won't let you because they want to hook you in, but the companies that just do repairs have contract options. We use: Accurate Utilities and they offer service contracts.

Re: Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

We use under 200 gallons of oil a year. But we pay a premium it seems because we don't buy enough.
I need to start pricing out COD this year and just calling as I need a drop.
Generally one fill up will last us the whole winter into spring.

Then 1.5 tons of pellets a year. (if it's a mild winter one ton will do it)
that costs about $250 a ton

i'm really out of the loop on pellet stoves. is this like a single room fireplace you burn pellets in? or is it somehow connected to your whole house heating system? sounds like you have the lowest heating costs of everyone here and i'm intrigued!

There are 2 options- we converted a fireplace with a pellet stove insert. If you don't have a fireplace you can have a free standing stove that will vent out an outside wall.
It is not connected to your heating system
We have a small house though (and a ranch ) so it heats our whole house- with a little help in the far flung rooms from e-heat units on the walls (electric panel heaters that cost VERY little to run)

The pellets burn so hot and efficient that in no time the house is over 80 degress and we have to lower it down or we are dying. In February.

There is NO smell- I can't stomach word burning stoves or camp fires or fire places any kind of burning wood smell...gives me a migraine.
This has no odor.

Best investment we have ever made in our house, hands down

Sure you do, they just steal from a different bucket. You pay a higher price for oil then if you got it without contract.

This is what I have found. If you were to buy that oil COD with no contract it would be cheaper per gallon.

Not sure about that as I get the "receipt" when I get a delivery and my price is less than the going price and I pay $1992/year with the contract included.

No it is not free but the price I pay, I don't think is that bad to get the oil and the contract.

We do not do balanced billing, but rather pay for each delivery when we receive it. I just looked at our bills from last year.

Between December 2014 and May of 2015 (our latest delivery), we have paid exactly $2,205.13 for heating - that was based on $3.549 per gallon.

This year we are locked in at 2.19 per gallon. If our consumption stays the same, we will pay $1,362 for heating. We are scheduled to convert to gas in the spring so this is our last year of oil.
