Background Check
I went on an interview last night for a nanny position. They asked if I would have an issue with a background check. I said no. Till I received the form. They are asking for my SS#. The last time a potential employer did one (for a nanny position as well) they only ran my license#.
I'm very weary of giving out my SS#.
This isn't through an agency it's privately.
What would you do?

Background Check
i wouldnt give it to them. Its one thing to give it to a company because they would need that info anyway, for taxes and whatnot... but no i wouldnt give it to a random person.

I should've added they would be paying me on the books.
So I guess they would also need it for tax purposes.
But I'm just not comfortable with it.

I would only give it to the if you got the job and then they would need it for tax purposes, since it's on the books.
For a background check, they shouldn't need it

I guess, but id still be pretty uncomfortable. Unless you can call the company thats doing the check and give them the info directly without having to give it to the people youd work for?

Background Check
If you want the job, I would give it. They probably want to check your credit to make sure you pay your bills, and that you wouldn't likely be stealing from them. Sounds logical to me to be honest.

Background Check
If its a true backround check, my company gave me the option of completing it on line where the info went directly to the company performing the background check. If they offer you the job and you accept I would give it.
I wanted to add, I am very uncomfortable giving out that info as well.

Re: Background Check
A SS# makes it easier to run a b/g check on someone...since it's a positive identifier linked only to you...helps sort through info that may pop up in a b/g check that may not actually relate to you but someone with a similar name/birthdate...

Background Check
I've had many background checks for employment (and fingerprints!) and I've always had to provide my SS# but as others said, hopefully you can work directly with the company doing the check.
I would just tell them you would feel comfortable providing it to the company directly. They have to respect that.

Re: Background Check
I would have no problem giving my social security number to a future employer. Whenever I started a new job, the paperwork always included my SS#. I can't recall if the background check required my SS but I would have no problem providing it.

Re: Background Check
They're trusting you with their kids. I'd want to know who's watching mine. Especially if they're paying you ON the books. I'm pretty sure they're not going to steal your identity. (Although you do never know). I'd take the chance.
Put yourself in their shoes.
