Is this the Class Moms Responsibility?

I am class mom for DD's preschool class this year. I was just wondering if I should be coordinating a class gift for her teacher or if all parents will do "their own thing' for the holiday gift?

Last year DD"s class mom arranged for an end of year gift for the teachers but everyone was on their own for Christmas etc.. Not sure what the norm is, or if there is one?

While Im at it-- What else do class moms typically do? (I didn't get a job description when I volunteered ahaha)

DS is in kindergarten. The class moms have always sent home an optional contribution envelope for anyone who wanted to do a class gift.
The class mom this year is doing the same.

In preschool its kind of an unofficial duty of the class mom. I'd ask a few people if there is interest in doing a group gift.

DS is in K and I'm a class mom (there is one other). We will have an optional collection for a holiday gift for the teacher after Thanksgiving.

We also coordinate class parties for each season and arrange for each child to have a parent attend. It's a lot of fun and really not much work.Chat Icon

Do you send home a note that the teacher sees? Or do it another way outside of school? I'm call mom for DS's class and trying to figure out how to do this

Thanks everyone. DD"s class mom last year did not arrange for a holiday gift so I thought maybe that was the norm but seems like-- that is the exception.
I will be emailing the moms to see who is interested in a holiday gift.
I created a class list at the beginning of the year so I would use that to contact the moms.

Re: Is this the Class Moms Responsibility?

I've been a class mom several times and in two different schools. Usually the rules regarding teacher gifts are spelled out for us. For example - we are allowed to collect only a certain amount of money and only once a year. Therefore, we do not do holiday gift collections. If the parents want to buy gifts or chip in to buy gifts that is fine but, it can't be done by the class mom - ONLY an end of year gift. In the private school I am a class mom for we are not allowed to collect for teacher gifts at all.

I have found that there isn't much grey area with being a class mom - pretty much everything I have to do is spelled out for me. It's how well you do the job that defines you as a class mom Chat Icon

For the poster that asked how you organize the gift - we email the parents and then the money or project (sometimes I have made books etc. at the end of the year for the teacher) is sent into school in a sealed manila envelope and comes to me via my child.

Oh I wish! I get zero direction from our preschool regarding the class moms obligations-- that's why I come on here lol I suppose I should have asked for a job description before accepting the position!Chat Icon

We are allowed to collect but it has to be optional, last yer I think one person sent in five dollars and the other class mom and i split the rest. So this year Im not asking (DD has the same class for 1st and 2nd grade so iI'm expecting the same) , let everything do their own thing.
