Sibling rooming in at hospital...wwyd?

I'm scheduled for a c-section on Fri, Dec 11. I have a 4 yr old DS. My husband is military, we live on a Navy base so no family around. We have offers from neighbors to watch DS friday during the day. The hospital I'm delivering at has a pullout sofa in the room, and husbands and siblings are welcome to room in the entire time. We're undecided on having DS room with us, or just have DH go home for the night with him (just 2 nights).

Is it worth having DS stay over where he might not sleep well with the baby and the nurses coming in and out, etc., in order to keep DH around? Or should I send him and DH home and be more or less on my own with baby for the night?

I'd send dh and ds home so at least they can get some rest. That's what I did when I had ds2. I also sent the baby to the nursery too so I could get a little sleep. Is that an option?

They won't take the baby to the nursery unless she has some issues. The nurses would help calm her if I really need it, but they'd hand her right back to me once she's settled down. They're pretty hands-off.

Oh, send DH home without a doubt! It never even entered my mind to have DH stay with me in the hospital. He would get a crappy night sleep and I have nurses and aids at my disposal should I need help. Many hospitals don't even allow them to stay, so I didn't feel it was an issue at all.

I'd want my husband with me Chat Icon He stayed with me the entire time with #1 and that helped me tremendously (we also lived 45 min away so going home for him wasn't an option anyhow). Now we live only a couple blocks away so it's more doable. I HATE hospitals though and feel anxious about having to be back in one. It makes me even more anxious to be left alone. I know he'd sleep better in his own bed, but so would I. lol. We're both in this thing together, so I kinda feel like that begins with the entire labor/deliver/hospital stay. He wouldn't leave me anyhow, even if I told him to. However, we do have MIL to take care of my 4 yr old DD. If we didn't have anybody then that would change things.

I think it depends on your own comfort. Will you be okay without DH? If so, then yes, send them home so that your DS can sleep well. If it makes you feel anxious, then keep them there. Your DS will probably sleep ok and if not, then your DH could bring him home in the afternoon for a nap, kwim? I think whatever you decide will work out fine either way.

My DH is going home. We have pets and i don't want them away from both of us for 2 days. We are about 40 minutes from the hospital but that's not really a big deal. I don't want him there overnight anyway. He would just be uncomfortable.

Re: Sibling rooming in at hospital...wwyd?

My husband never stayed. The first time, you could only stay in a private room and I didn't have one. The second and third times he went home to be with our girls...I felt that a new baby and me being away for 2 days was enough change..at least having their daddy putting them to bed and being there when they woke up kept some semblance of normalcy to their lives. We lived about 35-40 minutes from the hospital, so no huge deal to drive back and forth.

With my first, my DH stayed almost the whole time. I'm having my second on Wednesday and I'm planning on him being there a lot less. I'd much rather him be home to put my son to bed every night and play with him a few hours every morning. I feel like my sons world will be turned upside down as it is, I'd like my DH to at least be there as much as possible. My son is only 19 months so he doesn't understand anything about this baby right now.

Yes, definitely send them both home. I have never had a desire for my DH to stay with me in the hospital. Let them sleep.

This. I 'm a big girl, I don't need someone to stay with me in the hospital.
The following month after I had DD I ended up back in the hospital for my gallbladder and he wouldnt have been alowed to stay on thr surgical floor with me that night anyway. ..so it was good practice!

send DH home with DS
Let everyone get some sleep...no need for you all to be cramped in one room, waking up to a crying baby
Plus, your DS is going to have to adjust to a new baby at home, keep things as normal for him as possible

I would try to keep things as normal as you can for your son. His life is about to be turned upside down. You will have help from the nurses if you need it. Have your husband go home

I agree that I would send DH home to be with your son. I will say though--I'm sad that I don't even have that option to have DH stay with me. I'm surprised a lot of women on here would send DH home regardless! For me, I'm going to be in a shared room so DH can only come during visiting hours. Unless of course, I plan to dish out $900 a night for a private room (which I am actually considering).

Hearing everyone's responses actually make me feel better about being in a room without DH! I just pray I don't have a crazy roommate (I've heard tons of horror stories!)

I wouldn't even consider having let my son sleep at the hospital after I gave birth. Send your husband home with your older one.

DH stayed in the hospital overnight with our first. It was a big help in many ways especially since I needed a csection. With our second, DH went home at night. In our case the nurses had no problems taking the baby for 2-3 hours so I could get a little bit of uninterrupted rest. DH snores pretty badly anyway so I probably slept better without him there. Chat Icon

Edited to add that I really wouldn't want my older child to stay in the hospital with me so unless I was in unbearable pain and couldn't physically take care of the baby I would just have them go home.

Both times I sent my DH home to get sleep, If I needed help i would just buzz the nurses. When my 2nd was born we had my parents watch our DS during the day, and he went home with DH at night.

Same here. I want things as normal as possible for DD #1 so DH will be with her as much as possible. I figure at the hospital I will have the help of nurses so it made the most sense.

Re: Sibling rooming in at hospital...wwyd?

I sent dh home after around 7 both times
I needed peace and quiet to rest and recover
I also had option to send baby's to nursery which I fully took advantage of (in addition to ambien !)
IF that wasn't an option is have him and whatever army of people allowed to stay so they could care for baby while I got much needed rest
It's a personal choice .. If first night stinks then switch it up second

Same here.

I had both boys in the same hospital. For DS 1 - since I was formula feeding, they said they take him at night. For DS 2 - even though I was bottle feeding they were encouraging rooming in. I had been up 24 hrs, was exhausted and DH was going home so I was able to have him stay in the nursery for the night.

Both times, he went home. He needed to go lol. This time around it was necessary due to having our son at home with a routine.
