WWYD: Hospital Related
We just bought our first home & are closing May 7th. I am due June 14th. We plan to move in before arrives. There is one problem. My doctors only deliver at one hospital. This hospital is 33 minutes & 24 miles from our new home. I am 27 weeks, and don't know if it is too late to change doctors/hospitals. Anyone have any experience doing this? This is my first baby so I don't think labor is going to be all that quick, and I am debating not switching doctors/hospitals. My only concern is the time of day/traffic when I go into labor, and what if DH is at work? Is it crazy to even consider not switching doctors? I plan to talk to my doctor at my next appt, and see what their advice is. DH said we can try going all different ways, at different times of day to get a feel for it, even testing it out during rush hour. Part of me thinks it is nuts, and I should just switch doctors and deliver closer to our new home. That way if DH is at work he can just come home get me, and we are close, or I can go by ambulance if need be. DH works off hours and leaves the house at 4am, and is home by 3pm. I don't know what to do. My mom did some research for me, and was saying the hospital I am suppose to have the baby at now is one of the best hospitals in the state. WWYD?

Ultimately, you have to do what makes you comfortable. Many of my friends live in Suffolk and delivered at LIJ in New Hyde Park, which is quite a ride. If you head toward the hospital as soon as possible once your contractions start, you should be ok. Definitely speak to your doctor, though.

I don't think a 1/2 hour is really that far. If you really like your doctor I'd stick it out.

ITA. Where I grew up, the hospital was an hour away...it's just where you had to go. We didn't ever have to worry about traffic (middle of nowhere ) but it was still an hour drive to the hospital.
So to me, that wouldn't be a big issue.

I would stick with your hospital. My hospital is about 20 minutes away but it could be over an hour if I have to go during rush hour (it is usually dead stopped traffic at that time). I think its fine.

1/2 is def fine. We live in western suffolk and are delivering at North Shore Manhasset- at least 30 min.s away from us. We wanted to deliver there because its a great hospital and we love our OB who delivers there. If you love your dr., than I would not switch, you will get there in time!
My DH and I also work in the city but I will be working from home the last week. If I happen to go into labor while he's at work, I will either wait for him because the contractions are not close enough anyway or if they are close enough, I will have my mom drive me. If your labor starts and starts strong, you can always have an ambulance take you. But most first time mom's have plenty of time to get to the hospital.
