BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
We just bought our first home & are closing May 7th. I am due June 14th. We plan to move in before Chat Icon arrives. There is one problem. My doctors only deliver at one hospital. This hospital is 33 minutes & 24 miles from our new home. I am 27 weeks, and don't know if it is too late to change doctors/hospitals. Anyone have any experience doing this? This is my first baby so I don't think labor is going to be all that quick, and I am debating not switching doctors/hospitals. My only concern is the time of day/traffic when I go into labor, and what if DH is at work? Is it crazy to even consider not switching doctors? I plan to talk to my doctor at my next appt, and see what their advice is. DH said we can try going all different ways, at different times of day to get a feel for it, even testing it out during rush hour. Part of me thinks it is nuts, and I should just switch doctors and deliver closer to our new home. That way if DH is at work he can just come home get me, and we are close, or I can go by ambulance if need be. DH works off hours and leaves the house at 4am, and is home by 3pm. I don't know what to do. My mom did some research for me, and was saying the hospital I am suppose to have the baby at now is one of the best hospitals in the state. WWYD?

I don't think its that far away honestly. I would stick with your doctors and hospital if that is what you're comfortable with.

I agree with this. My hopstial was a half hour away... would have been more with traffic and I never even considered switching.

I wouldn't switch either...my hospital was about 25-30 minutes away as well.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
I live in RVC but am delivering baby#2 at Mt Sinai in the city. My doctors said even for #2 the distance really is not that bad but I'm praying I don't hit it during rush hour.
Even crazier is i could have a private room at South Nassau which I could practically walk to

I don't think that's bad at all. My hospital was basically the same distance away from me. Never occured to me to switch and I'll deliver there again when we hopefully have another.

I don't think that's bad either.
I lived in Port Washington when I had DD and drove to LIJ. With late morning traffic, it still took a half-hour. Now, I'm driving a half-hour to my hospital (Stony Brook) even though I live 5 minutes from two hospitals.
I would stick with your current OB if you have no problems with him/her.

I'd think you were fine - especially with a first child. I probably wouldn't switch either.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
I've been with my OB-GYN since she started her practice 10 years ago. When I was 32 weeks pregnant I moved an hour away from the hospital/her office. I figured I'd stick it out for the pregnancy then find someone new for any future pregnancies.
3.5 years and 2 babies later I am still living an hour away and it's been fine.
Believe me, you'll have time to get to the hospital when the time comes. Our "game plan" for each baby (including this one) is to leave for the hospital once contractions are 5-7 minutes apart.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
I might be the only one but as a btdt I would find a closer hospital. I wanted to labor at home for as long as possible and for me that was only 3 hours before my contractions were 2 mins apart! My contractions came on strong really fast. The 8 minute car ride to the hospital was torture! I couldn't imagine if it was over a half hour.
You have to do what you feel comfortable with... knowing what I know now I am glad I was only a few miles away from the hospital.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
I was about that far from the hospital for DS, and will be for DD. I had a kinda quick labor and all was fine, I even stopped at the bank and for a quick lunch!

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
We moved from Manhattan to LI when I was 26 weeks. I was torn between staying with my OB who I loved, and finding one closer to my new home. I wound up switching and was SO glad I did. I would have hated to drag into the city at the end of the pregnancy when you have an appointment every week. I also was at ease knowing the hosiptial was so close. I wound up loving my new OB, granted in the end I could have made it to a hospital in Canada since I never went into labor LOL,was induced.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
Thank you all so much for your advice. I really appreciate it. I think I am going to stick it out, and stay with my doctors/original hospital. We most likely will be moving into the house when I am 37 or 38 weeks pregnant. I will only have a few more appointments to go back & forth for, and DH's days off are during the week so I will make them when he can take me. Once I talk to my doctor, and we do some dry runs to figure out the best route I will feel better. Hopefully the car ride wont be torture. I want to labor at home for as long as possible, but being a first time mom I am sure I will end up going to the hospital earlier than I have to anyway. Thanks again can't wait to join you ladies officially in June!

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
I think it's a good choice to stick it out.
I'm in Holbrook and my doctor and hospital is in Manhasset. That's an hour trip but I've been with my doctor for over 10 years and I would not be comfortable switching.
When DD was born, the commute wasn't easy but worth it to me.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
My contractions come on very quickly and the 10-15 minute car ride to the hospital was horrible!! Thank goodness it was 3am. IMO I'd find a new OB

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
When I had DS, I lived in Levittown & delivered at Stony Brook. The ride wasn't the most pleasant, but I survived & made it in PLENTY of time.

Re: BTDT Mom/WWYD hospital related
My doctor was by work which is almost an hour away and so was the hospital.
It wasn't a problem at all.
