How to grieve taxes
Does anyone know how to grieve your own taxes? I have always had my lawyer do it, but then you split the difference with them. I heard you can just fill out the paperwork on your own. Is that true? If so, where do I find the paperwork?

Yep, I grieved my taxes last year and was offered a reduction. I filed on-line and live in Town of Oyster Bay. If I am correct, I should start seeing the reduction as of 1/1/16. Basically when you put in for a grievance, you are filing for the following tax year.

Re: How to grieve taxes
Did you just file online or gather backup? And if you gathered backup where did you look to get the information?

How to grieve taxes
When you file online, you can submit back-up with your application. There is an area within the application to submit comps.
I live in Town of Hempstead and did it for the first time last year and won. I plan on doing it again in January.

Re: How to grieve taxes
I only know how to do it for Nassau, but yeah everything nraboni said... I do it each year. Even if I don't save much at least I don't have to pay anyone.

Re: How to grieve taxes
Can someone explain step by step how this works?
What website do you go to? What comps do you look at? What paperwork do you submit? This would be our first time grieving and would like to be certain we do it the right way.

How to grieve taxes
Within the website there is a section to pick comps in and around your house. From there, you can pick up to 5 houses that are most like yours and are assessed at a lesser value than yours. You pick those houses from the list and they are submitted with your application.

How to grieve taxes
Anyone know the process for grieving what they show as your home square footage? We bought new construction in June. Town is showing the house is 4700 sq feet, all sale paperwork says 3400 sq feet. The mynassuaproperty site just says to call, which we will, but I am wondering what proof we'll need to show. I am assuming that is a huge difference in sq footage which will drastically affect our assessment.
