Commuters
I work in Manhattan and I'm planning n working up until I have the baby to save my PTO, but I'm really worried about my water breaking at work, and then having to take the LIRR or a car service back to LI. Are there any other commuters out there? What are your plans? Anyone with past experiences, please share!

Re: Commuters
Is there anyway for you to work from home for the last week or two? Most of my colleagues stopped coming in to the office but worked from home for the last one to two weeks if they didn't live in Manhattan.

I'd suggest what PP said which is what most women in my office do.

I stopped at 36 weeks bc of those fears. Job wouldn't let me work from home. I ended up getting induced late but still happy I stopped when I did.

My due date is on a Tuesday. I'm going on leave the Friday beforehand. I have some concern about going into labor and having to commute back to Long Island.....but if that happened, I would definitely take a car service (not the LIRR) -- I'm just being optimistic that I wont go early....of course, if I start having some contractions or Braxton hicks before my anticipated leave date, then I will work from home.....but for now, I'm just winging it! One of my colleagues started having contractions at work and went home. She had enough time to get home etc. .....fingers crossed for all of us that it would be the same!

I was planning to stay till the end with Hailey but i left a week early. On my last day i had a drs apt and i took the train there and i started having contractions on the train. It made me very uncomfortable to be underground alone. I didnt end up having her until a week later but im glad i left work early

Thanks guys. I'm planning on working from home a couple days a week for the last month before my due date (especially with weekly dr appointments), but I don't think my job would be okay if I asked to work from home every day. I work in a team based setting, so face to face time is pretty necessary. I'm torn because I want to save my PTO, but commuting in labor just sounds like a nightmare that I don't want to risk. Right now my plan is just hoping that I go into labor at home, but it still scares me.

Re: Commuters
I was commuting from LI to the city with my second. I planned on working right up until the day I delivered. I had the Uber app on my phone and it was all set if I went into labor at work.
I was having really bad swelling so I had started working from home twice a week towards the end. The day before I went into labor I was feeling off and worked from home. I started having contractions at 8pm and had DD the next morning. An OB broke my water at the hospital when I was already 9cm.
Most of the time, when you go into labor it starts with contractions first, not your water breaking. Not always, but usually. So I wasn't worried about it at all. And honestly? If my water did break at work, they would've just sent me to the hospital in a car. It's not like I would've taken the LIRR back home!

Re: Commuters
I commute 1.5 hrs into the city and also planned to work right to the end to save PTO... But then I got bleeding hemorrhoids and couldn't walk or sit so I ended up working from home the last two weeks... And the week that I was overdue. My boss was really understanding and I overcompensated while working remotely. I didn't use any PTO time though.

With my first, my job allowed me to work from home the last 5 weeks before I gave birth (he was a week late!) and I work in marketing for an architectural firm. Lots of proposals, presentations, coordination meetings...face time galore. We used email, Skype and FaceTime to make it work and it all worked out wonderfully.
I would propose working from home full time the last couple of weeks before your due date, assuming your doctor allows you to continue to commute. My doctor told me that if they didn't allow me to work from home, he was going to pull me from commuting 5 days a week and eventually all together. All they can say is no, right?

I do not work in the city, but I did work on the day I went into labor. I actually drove myself 30 mins to dr to confirm that I was in labor and then drove 25 minutes home. I gave birth 4 hours later.

Re: Commuters
I needed to work until the end to save as much of my vacation time as possible to be paid out at home while on leave. I think if I worked in the city I probably would have stopped working a week before my due date but then again it depends on how you feel. I commute via car about a 40 minute drive to work, and with both pregnancies worked up until the very end. I was just fortunate that both times, my water broke in the evening after work LOL.

Can you maybe come up with a plan to present to your boss to say "this is how i'll handle x y and z from home" Present in a way that you can still handle what needs to be done daily.
