Tipping - for a service that's $$$$
I was afraid to even post this on FHF - I feel like it's one big drama fest over there
Anyway - if you get something really expensive done - is a 15-20% tip still required or customary?
I'm talking about my hair extensions which cost a lotttt to get them totally removed and redone (which is done twice a year). I tipped closer to 12% because I simply hadn't taken out enough cash to give 15-20%.
Now i feel bad because I was there from 10am - 6pm with the one girl working on me. But at the same time I'm thinking - when a service is that $$, does someone still really expect a 15-20% tip? I don't know...
(I should add that the girl who does my hair is the owner of the salon if that matters nowadays. I have always tipped owners the same but I know my mom and some people feel it's not necessary to tip an owner)
ETA I did the math just now and I gave 13.5% which was $240. . Last time I had this done it only took five hours and cost quite a bit less so I really wasn't prepared for this.

Yes . You should have given 20%. You were likely her only client of the day therefore her only tip that day. Doesn't matter if she's the owner she performed a service and hair extensions are a lot of work. Just my opinion!

Thanks! I appreciate the honesty. I just underestimated and took out too little cash.
Side note, but a place that does really expensive services should allow tipping on credit card IMO. That would have solved the problem right there. Othwrwise you're guessing at the cost to bring cash for the tip.
Ugh I feel bad but I've over tipped in the past too so hopefully it all works out in the end.

Yikes...I get that it's expensive but to take up 8 hours of her day you have to assume she will have no other income. I would definitely tip 20%.

I think you tipped fine for a service that expensive. It's not a great tip but really she's the owner... it's not like she only get's 50% of the bill.
They should allow tipping on a credit card. I hate when places don't because I always have to make sure I have cash. It's so inconvenient.
ETA - My opinion would be different if she was an employee.

Yeah for the removal and then all new ones it was 18something. I was not expecting it to be that much that's for sure. The original extensions weren't that much.
But if you saw my natural lame hair you'd understand

Wow what kind of extensions do you get? Back when I was getting mine it was not nearly this much! If my memory serves me right mine were about $750 for the first time and then maintenance every few months was around $200-$250 depending on how many pieces needed to be replaced.

They are Socap human hair. Not sure why so expensive! I do have a lot of them (bc my natural hair is so fine) so maybe i have more than most people get...

Oh wow I used Socap too, I loved them!! Maybe prices have gone up significantly, it's been a few years for me. I'm sure your hair looks beautiful with them and that's what's most important!

And to answer you original question, I used to tip about 10% for a big service like that. I think you MORE than covered a reasonable tip, I'm sure the stylist was happy with what she got.

You should have just put the pricing to begin with, because I would agree that what you tipped justified the service.

Re: Tipping - for a service that's $$$$
It's hard b. I can do let's say 4 clients in two hours and get 4 tips. I can do someone's color correction that takes 4 hours and end up with less tip total for the day sometimes. I did a 350 job the other week and was given 12 dollars and the assistant got 3. I know tips are not mandatory but MOST do not get vacation health insurance paid time off and buy their own equipment so honestly yes it does hurt Then again some people give 10 dollars for a free bang trim or 20 for a blowout. I totally understand $$$ being tight so to me if someone can't tip or can't do much the best thing anyone has ever said to me is "you are worth triple this but my pocket isn't full and I realllly love how you do my hair" and then they recommended me to others ????. It's not all about the money but just like everyone else bills have to be paid. Now if an owner...all bets are off honestly bc they profit 100 percent. Referrals are the best ...spreading the word means so much more. Oh and not cancelling a 3 hour appointment 5 minutes before scheduled lol doxo

ETA - My opinion would be different if she was an employee.
She can't "not allow" it, she just doesn't want to pay taxes in it. If anyone tells me that (esp an OWNER) I tell them it's either on the cc or it's nothing. They change their mind fast! To answer your question, your tip was fine.

I have a merchant account. I work in web design and marketing (so tipping doesn't take place) but the agreement I signed says I can't add anything (like a tip or cash back) onto the total. To accept tips, the slip has to print out with the section for the customer to write it in. From my understanding only certain types of merchant accounts do that. So technically, if they don't have the type of account where that section prints onto the receipt, they aren't allowed by the credit card processing company to add it on.
You giving them an ultimatum just makes them bend the rules, it doesn't make it the right thing for them to do.

Yes many aren't allowed to "add on" bc of the merchant agreement

Isn't it strange though to not be set up with a tip friendly merchant account when you run a largely tip based business?

The processing fees for that type of account are lower. Accepting credit cards can be very costly for a small business.
Not only do business owners pay a fee per transaction, they also pay a percentage of the transaction amount (and other various monthly fees) just to accept credit cards. It really adds up.
Asking customers to tip cash is a way to keep costs down. It's not that strange. I know a bunch of small businesses that don't accept credit cards at all. I like their services so I go back. It's a PITA but I guess I shouldn't complain because it's better then them passing the cost on to me by raising their prices.

the owner should not be accepting a tip, she is keeping the entire fee. I know owners of salons and they have said owners should never take a tip.
