spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?
have you ever gone out of your way to let supervisors/management know of when someone has done a great job?
i work in customer service, and we mostly get complaints of when things didn't go well. so it's a rare treat when we hear of the things we do right.
because of that, i try to let management know of who is doing an excellent job.
target has customer cards in the customer service area. i try to use them when i get great service.

I usually over tip when I get great service. Well, I over tip in general but if the server really went above and beyond I super tip.

Re: spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?
yes I definitely have. i've also "complimented the chef" before.
i absolutely agree that it's usually the complaints that get to management. and, having had someone deliver a compliment about me to my management, i know how much it means personally. so i try to give that back when i have the opportunity.
years ago when i was a paralegal, right before i went to law school, there was an attorney that wanted to get a closing done for his client... on christmas eve. my firm was representing the bank, so we had to prepare the loan docs, etc. anyway my firm was "closing early" at 1:00. i stayed there until i did everything that had to be done on my end, until about 4:00. anyway guy wrote a really great letter to my boss, and being i still work at the same place, it's still in my personnel file lol.
just one of those things i'll never forget

No and I really should. The only time I ever do mention it is like in Victoria's Secret last week one of the women really helped me and I mentioned it at the counter. I think they get some commission.

I have done that for really great waiters. I've also tried to at places like Lowe's and Babies R Us but they always make me call some phone number or go online, which is very irritating. I can never remember to do it.

in this era of emails...believe me, so many people email their compliments in and it makes a huge difference.
dh gets a lot of emails on himself sent to the main office...it helps so much at review time.

Re: spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?
Sure... and not just in the restaurant/food industry.
I had a great experience this weekend with one of the salespeople at Lowe's in Hicksville. She went above and beyond to help me locate an over the range microwave that I could pick up that day. Every other store and location had at least a week wait... (seems they are all warehouse items ). anyway, not only did she call me back when she said she would, she found me a great deal and got me it for $30 less than the cost - and had it waiting for my car when I arrived an hour later to get it. And she called me back the next day to make sure I got it home ok (I went with the kids to pick it up and it was heavy and I had help loading it into the car). I plan on making sure someone knows she did her job well.

Re: spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?
I did this only once because I was beyond happy with my service. The waiter was absolutely amazing in every way. He filled our sodas even before they ran out. He was on top of everything and his personality was outstanding. He was so great that the next time DH and I went back to the restaurant we asked for him to serve us. When I went to the manager to let him know how outstanding he was the manager said he gets that a lot about him and that hes one of his best workers.

Re: spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?
Yes. We recently had direcTV installed in the house on our horse farm. The young man who came to install it could not have been more polite, more competent, and more professional. My husband and I were just so pleased with the service. We called t speak to his supervisor to tell him how happy we were with the service.

Re: spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?
Absolutely
Regardless of the service, rental company, restaurant, etc
But at a restaurant I've even waited for managers just to tell them how GREAT out experience was in detail.
I truly believe in Karma and you never know how much a good word can mean. Yet so many just smile and figure saying something nice to them is enough. I don't. Ever had a GREAT waiter and yet overhear the next table complain about them? I take the time.
I've had enough cruddy days in my life that I wished someone would appreciate the efforts I've put forth.
Oh and this especially goes for crappy service rescued by a server. I had one who gave me 3 wrong meals and had my 2yr old waiting to eat AFTER our meals got right for hubby and I. She busted her buns to get it right, ticked off the chefs and other wait staff and a few other guests. I could see her. She really really gave it her all. No comp on our ticket. But AJ got her meal, we got ours and she didn't say a word negative to us (we sent AJ's food back twice). She did her best. That deserved a good word. It could have been worse. She could have been rude to me. She made it work out even if it wasn't as smooth as we'd all hope. I knew I was the crappy guest. It wasn't my fault AJ hated their food and the chef ignored our order request of sauce on the side. But instead of complaining I complimented her.
Should seen the look on her managers face when he finally got to me. was totally expecting me to complain.

have you ever gone out of your way to let supervisors/management know of when someone has done a great job?
YES. Most definitely!
One example... we had MAJOR MAJOR Cablevision issues for over a month. It went beyond anything I've ever experienced. We had a private # for the head of some dept. it got that bad. Anyway...
One of the 100x we had someone come to the house this guy came, a tech. He was the NICEST, most considerate person I've ever dealt with. He went ABOVE and beyond helping. He cleaned up my computer, he fixed the tv settings, he was just such a huge help that I felt it was my duty to call.
So I immediately called his supervisor and left a report. The Customer Service person IMMEDIATELY thought I was calling to complain...etc. I was like "NO!!! I want his supervisor to know what an amazing job he did and what a nice person her was, etc etc."
The customer service rep was SO thankful that I had taken the time to call. She was so appreciative that I was one of the few to call and give a good report.
So I make it a point now... if you deserve recognition for a job well done, you're getting it.
If you s*ck as a person, a waiter/waitress, customer service rep, anyone... then you won't get my 2 cents. And that goes for tipping too!
