UPDATED-----Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ???

If you did travel prior to the news of the ZIKA virus outbreak....

Are you or your OB doing anything???

I did traveled right around the new year and I didn't think much of it until this week.
MY DH is freaking out!!!!

I placed a call to my OB as a precaution to see what she says but of course I still have no return phone call since 10 am this morning
Just curious what others are doing if anything

Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ???

Same---we were in St. Maarten at the end of December. I'm curious what your OB says because I didn't even bring it up to mine. There were no bugs in St. Maarten though, and I don't remember getting bitten by anything. So I hope I'm safe.

Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ???

Have you had any symptoms? Do you remember being bitten by a mosquito?

Re: Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ???

I feel I do not have any symptoms especially in the two weeks post travel that they state symptoms are seen
I do not believe I had any bug bites at all and I always get bitten and then go crazy scratching them and they are noticeable

MY OB just called back
basically there are a few questions and then based on your response is which protocol to follow

So I am a pregnant woman who traveled where I could have potentially been exposed to the virus - for me yes -so she is recommending that I come in for a sono to check the development of the brain
She then stated that I will most likely do a few precautionary sonos throughout the rest of my pregnancy just to keep any eye on everything.

If I was experiencing symptoms - which I am not - then she recommends the sono and a blood test right now

However she said if I would like to do the blood test even if I am not experiencing any symptoms, she would be glad to give me the paper work and send me off to a lab to draw blood.
If you do the blood test, the department of health will be contacting me to ask questions and follow up.

However, she stated, unfortunately there really is nothing that we can do even if someone test positive for the virus - there is no antibiotic or vaccination

Hope this was helpful and everyone is feeling good.

I was in St. Thomas mid November, at around 28 weeks. One night we went to an outdoor restaurant where I did get bitten alive! Zika wasn't in the news yet, and from what I hear, the USVI just got added to the list of countries. Still, I can't help but have a little anxiety about everything. I'm
Having a c-section next week, so will be talking to the ped at the hospital to see is DS will need any further testing.

Re: Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ??? UPDATED

So I went in this evening for my Zika Sono screening

The sono tech was very nice and said that this is still all so new and they are collecting information each day from the department of health

During my sono the tech said they are instructed to look for a few things:
1- head measuring smaller than due date or smaller since the last sono appointment
2- inset of eye sockets since last sono
3- calcification on the brain
4- calcification in the stomach

Thank god I was cleared for everything and the baby is looking great at this point
I still need to follow up with my doctor with regards to another follow up sono and potential bloodwork.
But so far so good!!!!
Hope this helps anyone

Glad your OB is being proactive about it! Are you planning to do the blood test as well? I've read that there have been false positives for people who aren't exhibiting symptoms so that's why they are recommending only to go in if you have symptoms or something irregular came up on the sonogram. Just something to keep in mind so you don't worry yourself needlessly. Good luck!!! Chat Icon

Re: UPDATED-----Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ???

I was in PR over MLK weekend (so, over 2 weeks ago - they upped the recommendation from "wear bug spray and be vigilant" to "do not travel" while I was there). I did get 1 bug bite while I was there, but it wasn't itchy like bug bites usually are for me. I haven't had any symptoms. 32w at the time, 35w today.

Went to OB last night and she said NJ (where I live) won't authorize the blood test unless you are showing symptoms, but they recommend doing a growth scan to check for symptoms. For me, since I'm so close to the end, it will just be one additional growth scan (like was mentioned above) that I am supposed to try to get within the next two weeks.

She said she has another patient who was somewhere (can't remember where) on the list and is much earlier on in pregnancy (like before 20 weeks), and they suggested doing scans every 2 weeks for the rest of her pregnancy. Dr. was not psyched about that recommendation and wanted to be able to order the blood test.

Thanks for sharing the details of your scan - helps me know what to expect!

UPDATED-----Spinoff - ZIKA VIRUS ???

I was going to post the exact same question yesterday.

So I travelled in Sept.. and I found out I was expecting after nearly a year and half of trying (another story) anyway, I was on a cruise, stopped by a St. marten and St. Thomas. Didn't think much of it, but yesterday my idle mind realized that I was technically pregnant when I was on vacation, or in my 2WW.

Since my Level 2 was ok, she said we'll discuss further at the next appt. She didn't seem concerned, but I will ask for another sono later on.

I have also read there are so many false positives so I am not rushing to get the blood test at all.
I have my regular scheduled OB appointment on Tuesday so I am going to discuss my further options at that point. I think I am just going to ask for another follow up sono because they seem to be more informative.
