Speech Therapy Advice/Support
Loooooooong time lurker. This board is full of such great information that I thought I could use some support.
My 6 year old (at the time) DS developed a stutter at the end of the school year last year. It was shocking as he has always had perfect speech up until then. It went away in the summer and I attributed it to not being in school. He has always hated school and it's a big stress of his. Although he does wonderfully in school, he just doesn't like going and doing 'work'.
The stutter slowly returned around November but quickly subsided. I could see him figuring out ways on his own to control and cope with it.
He's now 7 years old, It's back and I received an email from his teacher suggesting I contact the school district for services. (He's in a private Catholic school).
I'm of course in denial that I have to make the call to the school district but know in my heart it's time to get him the help he needs and advocate for him.
Any help, suggestions and guidance in how to get this ball rolling (and the time frame of how long this could take to get him services) would be much appreciated.

My recommendation would be to seek out a speech-language therapist who specializes in stuttering. Where are you located? I could recommend someone.

Steffi Schopick is great. They are in Syosset. I run the Long Island Chapter of the National Stuttering Association if you have any questions.

Speak with a professional on the outside first for several reasons:
1) sometimes stuttering can get worse if you bring it to the individual's attention; sometimes doing nothing is better. A specialist can advise you best
2) school districts may not give services anyways. Technically, it must significantly interfere with instruction in order for him to qualify. You'd be putting your child through a lot of other mandated tests (iq, educational, etc.) on,y to find out he may not be able to be serviced anyways through the schools.
3) though speech therapists in schools are highly trained and effective, you want a specialist for stuttering.
