Help diagnose DS!

Can anybody help me with my son? He has a lot of little issues that add up to bigger problems and I'm having trouble figuring out what to do next. We have a well visit coming up, so I wrote a list of things as they come up that I can speak to ped. about.

DS:

-not socially appropriate
-perfect 1:1, but extremely hyper in social situations. Can sit down and have a highly mature conversation with somebody, but the minute other things start happening, he's done
-Extreme emotions, whether it be happy, sad, mad, etc.. There is no "normal" mood
-Hyperfocuses on things that he likes (ie - he can do Legos for 8 hours at a time and do 14 year old legos without using directions)
-Gets thoughts in his head and perseverates on them (ie - right now he is beyond obsessed with dry erase markers and Jump Rope for Heart)
-Gets in laughing fits and won't stop laughing for an hour
-Extremely anxious and has irrational fears that you can't talk him out of
-Has many sensory issues and barely eats. Goes to food therapy
-Everything in life is a struggle (will not take meds, just started brushing his teeth, etc....)

He is perfect in school, just can't stop yelling out answers since he knows them immediately. He is diagnosed with ADHD and at high risk for anxiety and OCD. He is also gifted. Does any of these things point to anything else? His neurologist said many of these things looks like he's on the spectrum, but I'm a special ed teacher and I really don't think so... He's such an outgoing happy boy and I'm not seeing it as that, even if she mentioned high functioning... Just wanted to throw it out there to see if any of these signs jumped out at them. Thank you!!

ETA: I don't know if I described it right when I said not socially appropriate.. He isn't doing anything that necessarily is deemed inappropriate. He just doesn't know when to stop and where boundaries are when he's overstimulated.. I can't describe it too well...

Help diagnose DS!

Sounds like Aspergers to me as everything you described is almost like my daughter. Get him evaluated and you'll know for sure and it will help you to get specific services or accommodations you may need now or in the future.

Thank you for your input! I think I may take him to a developmental ped and see what they say. His neurologist didn't help too much and just said come back if you want to put him on meds, which I don't want to do. Thank you!

It sounds like you already have a diagnosis- The ADHD and gifted piece, to me, explain all if not most of the concerns you describe.
Has anyone referred to him as 2e (twice exceptional)?
If you are not familiar with what that is, do some googling. There is a lot of helpful info out there on ways to understand and help 2e kids. Good luck, and hang in there!

Yes, I have been looking into him being 2e which definitely explains a lot.. I've been doing a lot of research on Dabrowski's overexcitabilities too. That's what I've been leaning towards, rather than Asperger's or anything. He's such a good little boy. I describe him as "too happy" to people... Thanks for your input!!
