How many years of work in public school in nassau or suffolk...

that is required in order to receive maternity leave?

Curious for a friend that is searching for a job. I realize that districts have different unions and it can differ, but is there an average amount of time??

I thought you were entitled to FMLA pretty much from the beginning? The issue is with getting paid for the time. In my district, you have to use accrued sick time in order to get paid for the 12 weeks so it would take several years (5 or so) to accrue enough time. She could take a maternity leave before then but wouldn't get paid for all of it. It varies from district to district though.

In order to be eligible for FMLA, you have to be working f/t for a year. That's true in any field.

Technically you can take FMLA at any point after that, but a lot of teachers wait until they are tenured if possible. I think the probationary period just got bumped to 4 years?

1 year until fmla protects you...in my district there is no leave per se...you get what you are entitled to from fmla (12 weeks) and you can use sick time for 6 weeks vaginal / 8 weeks c-section...after that you are unpaid...unless your doctor won't clear you and then you can be paid longer. If you don't have the time, you are unpaid.

This...and if you are untenured, you will come back and some districts (mine especially) will find some other reason not to give you tenure!

They seriously will not give you tenure because you had a baby! That's ridiculous.
