Re: Car seats/strollers
I'm a ftm, so I'm going solely from recommendations from friends/family and from being a nanny myself... Snap and go strollers are great in the beginning (the infant seat with the plain graco or Chico stroller frame), especially if you're going to be dropping off and picking up from daycare early on. I plan on doing to the graco elite frame ($99) with the graco 35lx infant seat ($149). I'm also getting the Contours Bliss 4-in-1 stroller to keep at home. The seat faces you or faces out, and the seat reclines all the way back and converts into a pram/bassinet. I plan to use that for walks around my neighborhood and such. And will keep the snap and go frame in my car.

Re: Car seats/strollers
I'm in the same boat as the above poster- FTM going on recommendations but it seemed like a travel system worked best for us. We went with the Chicco Bravo with the Chicco Keyfit 30 car seat- the travel system comes with snap and go stroller, car seat, and base. It came highly recommended to us from everyone who has a Chicco product.

Car seats/strollers
I didn't do a travel system. I got a car seat I liked and a snap n go (baby trend is a universal one) for the first few months. Then i had a city mini gt once the baby was too big for the car seat. I know many people aren't thrilled with the strollers that come with travel systems and would rather get a separate one. Definitely test drive them.

I'd pick a stroller you like first. Think about what you need (large basket, rideability, ability to convert to double in future, price point, etc.) You really have to test them in person. Then I'd pick a car seat that is comparable or that they make an adaptor for or I'd get a cat seat and a snap and go for the first few months and an additional stroller for when they outgrow the snap n go. It really depends on your lifestyle.
For me I need a huge basket. I'm always carrying a million things and I preferred four wheels over three (better on bumps and curbs). I do a lot of outside walking.

Re: Car seats/strollers
So I just got the snap and go for the infant seat, and then when she outgrew the infant seat, we bought the City Mini- best decision ever. That thing was awesome.

I LOVE my City Mini.... I have refused to get a double stroller and just wear my little guy when my 3 year old wants to be in a stroller because I love it so much!

Re: Car seats/strollers
When I was a FTM, I researched the he ll out of everything. I relied heavily on a few websites that were independent reviewers. I think one was the baby bargains website.
I did not do a travel system either. I did the infant seat and a convertible car seat. I bought the Uppababy Vista and bought the car seat adaptor so it was essentially a snap and go.
When picking a stroller, I think the most important things are maneuverability, weight, ease of fold and size of the storage basket.
