Split levels
Anyone with a split make a half wall between dining and kitchen? We're looking to not break it down completely - still want formal dining room, but thinking of half wall. any pics? Advice?

Do you already have an open floor plan? We have that, but the wall from the kitchen/entry hall is still there, too. The half wall is basically a breakfast bar with stools but don't really use that. We have a small kitchen so we couldn't lose the counter space or cabinet there by taking it all out.

No open floor plan - currently all walls up. You enter house, go up 5 steps - wall - then kitchen, walls, dining room and that opens into living room.

Split levels
We knocked down all walls on the main level. I love how nice & open it is. We lost the formal dining room, but the only formal dinner I host is Christmas, and this past Christmas everyone loved to be around the island or sitting on the couch and still able to be apart of the conversation in the kitchen.

I know this doesnt answer your question, but we just knocked down that wall in our split and we still consider the dining room a separate "dining room" even though its now an open floor plan. We had considered keeping a partial wall (not a half wall you can see over, more like just taking down half the wall) but it didnt make sense from a usable space perspective since kitchen is small. We did an island instead which is sorta like the divider between rooms.

We did this and it is the best move ever. I still keep my casual kitchen table but also kept a formal dining room. I love it for entertaining since I can still see everyone and cook at the same time. It even made the AC flow better on that level. We did not make a half wall, but opened up like a huge rectangle in the wall.

My aunt lives in a split and has a half wall between the kitchen and dining room. They don't use it as a breakfast bar but do use the counter spade for serving, etc. they only have a table in the dining space.

Split levels
We have a split you walk into the living/ dining on the main floor then up 5 steps are all the bedrooms in the kitchen there are steps to go down to our family level. We have not redone this and still have the wall up. Our plan is to do Scale the wall back a bit to make the entry to the kitchen larger and move our fridge for us it doesn't make sense to take it down. We can't do a breakfast bar since our front door is right on the other side. My neighbor did a half wall and complete reconfiguration and it looks awesome. Costly I'm sure but awesome and more functional. I say if your budget allows I would do it!

We have a split and there was a wall between the kitchen and dining room - we knocked it down about a month ago when we started our kitchen renovation. I love the open floor plan now and the dining room still feels separate from the kitchen.

My aunt did this when she remodeled her kitchen. She put slab of granite on top and some bar stools. It's great for holidays because it adds extra prep space or casual seating. Her dining room is narrow otherwise and it really opens up the space.

We decided to remove the wall entirely and double the size of the kitchen. I considered the half wall, but the existing kitchen size was just SOO small that I felt like even with the half wall, I still wouldn't have enough storage or space.
As it was, we NEVER sat in the living room since we have a family room on the ground level, so we decided to make the kitchen/dining the entire kitchen and then the Living Room became the dining room.
Yet if you have a split with more square footage, I think a half wall could definitely work.
I included some pics in my album of the reno with the wall and then without.

I got them in the toast with chrome nailheads - but my sister has them in the natural with bronze nailheads and they are really nice too!

we have a half walk between kitchen and dining. we are not ready to do kitchen over yet, but it will be a nice peninsula when we do!
For now, we added 2 18" cabinets along it and put a formica counter that matches our existing counters. but the side for the dining room is still a painted half wall.
