Flu and pregnancy

I'm newly pregnant, like only 4 weeks. I'm pretty sure my 3 year old has the flu. How horrible would it be for me Id I catch it? On top of feeling so horrible for him, I'm so nervous! I'm just a big pile of nerves!!

Oh no :( You should call your dr and say your child has the flu- They should prescribe you tamiflu and give you the flu shot as a preventative measure

DD2 had flu when I was about 5 weeks. I didn't catch it and we had shared food and straws before I knew she had flu.
From what I found online, flu doesn't cross the placenta, so that's good. But, fever could be dangerous.

Flu and pregnancy

Definitely call your doctor - but I wouldn't take Tamiflu or get the flu shot. It's too early in your pregnancy and there is almost no research on the effects of Tamiflu on a fetus. Plus, I don't think getting the flu shot now will do you any good at all.

I still have to take him to the dr to determine if it is the flu. I'm just a panicky person. We go soon. Hopefully it's not.

Nope. My doctor didn't even recommend it to me. I don't do flu shots in general, so probably would have refused anyway.

Re: Flu and pregnancy

I got the flu when I was at the beginning of my pregnancy...I went to Urgent Care and they were all shocked that I didn't get the flu shot.
Luckily, it wasn't too bad of a strain, mostly really tired. But the doctor said that he wouldnt recommend Tamiflu...he said if I were his wife, he wouldnt give it to me. He said to call the OB and get their advice, they said the same thing....so I just had to wait it out.

If you do get it, just make sure you try to rest (I know it'll be hard with DS Chat Icon ) and drink TONS of fluids

Re: Flu and pregnancy

I would not take Tamiflu when pregnant (well I wouldn't take it ever ,but that's not the point).

I was VERY laid back in pregnancy- ate and drank everything that was a "no-no" but Tamiflu is just too scary even for me

Not sure how much this applies, but I think I had the flu when I was like 3 weeks pregnant. I loaded up on Advil for days. I'm now almost 9 weeks and everything is ok so far. My doctor said there should be no ill effects.

Hope you are ok!

I wouldn't take it, nor would I give it to my child. But that's just me. Way too early in your pregnancy...way too early. I wouldn't take it even if I wasn't PG!

Definitely wouldn't take tamiflu. When my 2 1/2 yr old had the flu it was a sucky few days but he got over it. Sanitize the crap out of your house and wash your hands- but personally I wouldn't give either of you the tamiflu.

I did not get the flu shot when I was pg and I 100% regret it. Had I gotten it, immunity would have been passed along to my dd to protect her since babies can't get it until 6 months. For you though, probably not much point in it now.

If my OB gave me tamiflu I'd take it. Nope, no studies to back tamiflu during pregnancy. There are no real studies of any drugs in pregnant women because pregnant women are barred from most clinical trials. There are, however, studies proving that flu/high fever are dangerous during pregnancy.

Flu and pregnancy

I had the flu around 5/6 weeks, and did take tamiflu based on my doc and obs suggestion. I had a low grade fever for 4 days, but it never really hit over 100.

I'm 13 weeks now, and have my nt scan tomorrow. As far as I know, everything is fine. I did what I needed to based on my symptoms.

Re: Flu and pregnancy

And just so you know, DH took Tamiflu and it did nothing. His fever was just as high as mine.
Imo too much risk for questionable reward.
