Re: Sudeen nasty smell in house

Do you have a bathroom in the basement that doesn't get used frequently? Flush the toilet and run some water in the sink and bath/shower. If not used, the water in the p-trap (i think that is what it is called) can evaporate and the sewer gases can waft up and it will stink. We had this happen in the past and once we made the habit of occaisonally running some water it's never happened again. I hope that's all it is.

Thanks so much for your response. No, there is no bathroom in the basement. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: Sudden nasty smell in house

Is your washing machine in the basement?

We have a problem every once in a while with our washer, the vent gets clogged and we get a nasty cesspool-like smell.

Can't problems with a gas leak cause an egg-like smell?

Does it smell like mold? If yes and the source of the smell is your washer or dryer do a deep clean with vinegar.

It smells more like garbage or almost like a cabbage smell. I hate to say what I come up with googling that. I am going to look into the washer more because it came up a few times here.

Yes sometimes this happens with my washer, I usually run a cycle with bleach and it solves the problem

Re: Sudden nasty smell in house

Call PSEG to come and check your gas line- if you have gas.

We suddenly had a terrible smell in our 1st home years ago in the basement- smelled like garbage/dead animal.

It was a very involved gas leak. If you call, they come very quickly.

Thanks for sharing this. Only thing is, we don't have gas. But it sounds like your situation was the same as far as smell. I am hoping to find out what it is and hoping it is not a dead animal. It's awful walking in my house and especially basement and smelling this and not knowing. Makes me feel like my home is dirty. All windows are open in basement and it is terrible.

a dead mouse or very small animal like that will not smell for days. It would be maybe 2ish. There isn't much to them to break down and smell.

Gee...I don't know then. At some point I have to call someone in but I don't know who. It is still in the house. Chat Icon
