New here- My story and some questions!

Hi Ladies-
I am so glad to have found another forum to discuss my journey on. I have been on the two week wait boards for quite some time, but it has seemed to have fizzled out a bit over there.

Quick background on me: I'm 32, DH is 32, We have been TTC #1 since July 2014. I've had blood work on day 3, and day 21 that came back ok. I also had an HSG that came back all good. DH had an SA- all good. We started seeing the RE (Center for Human reproduction) in early March of this year- deemed "unexplained infertility". We have since had two failed IUI's on 50mg's of Clomid and 2nd IUI we did an Ovidrel Trigger shot. We are currently working towards IUI #3 (hoping 3rd times the charm?!). Again he's got me on 50mg's of clomid and the plan is to do the trigger shot again.

I feel like it is silly to continue to do the same thing when it has not worked the past two times, but I'm not sure if this is standard procedure. I'm just looking for any feedback/opinions. Do your RE's change things up? My other concern is that my insurance only covers a certain dollar amount of fertility treatments per calendar year and we are swiftly approaching that mark. So I'm getting a little worried. Chat Icon

Looking forward to getting to know everyone! So sorry for the long post!!

New here- My story and some questions!

Are you responding to the clomid? Has he mentioned IVF as an option? Has he mentioned possibly using injectables? Does your insurance cover them?

I have done many IUI's and for me they do not work but my insurance requires that I do them.

Re: New here- My story and some questions!

I did an IUI with clomid in 09 that conceived my son. first try; no triggers. My OB did it. at that point I was 30 and had been trying for almost a year. I have no history of any issues so he was like lets try this.

so last year I went back to him to try again. I did 5 rounds of clomid (2 of them timed intercourse, the other 3 were IUI's with triggers)..and nothing.

IUi's can be an inexpensive alternative compared to IVF if you dont have coverage. You're still young so doing another IUI is not a bad idea. if you have coverage you should see if they require you to do IUI's before IVF. Mine required 6 IUIs or medicated cycles for women under 37. However, my employer/plan sponsor did not require that so I was actually cleared to start IVF anyway. you may have no choice to do IUI's before exploring other options with insurance.

I had a lifetime max of 15K in pharma and 15K in treatments. not calendar year like you. I maxed that out really fast.

When I first started doing IUI's (8 years ago) Chat Icon Chat Icon ; I did 2 rounds of Clomid. When that didn't work I asked to do the next month on Injectables.

In this process, I had learned real fast; you have to speak up and ask questions.

IF; there is a next time; I would ask DR to go that route instead.

I'd strongly encourage you consider injectables. I did natural and clomid IUIs and always BFN. 1st time I did an injectable IUI...DS. 2nd time injectable IUI...DD.

New here- My story and some questions!

Is he planning on upping your dose next time at all if this time doesn't work? I wouldn't keep doing the same protocol...clomid, ovidrel & IUI if it hasn't worked by now. I would at least see if you can get the dose changed to 100mg at least. When we were ttc dd i had to get to 200mg of clomid before we conceived but now, after everything we have been through to ttc #2, it seems like a drop in the bucket.
if you do try a higher dose and that doesn't work, i would also highly suggest moving on to injectibles with IUI.

YES!! after my first failed cycle I came in for my review consult and had a whole list of bullet points to go over. Came with one of those black portfolio binder things (I carry one for work).

My Dr. was impressed..he said not many people come in with questions or organized thoughts (and i totally know why b/c your brain is swimming most of the time).

alot of stuff I had gotten off these boards or in my own research.

Do not be afraid to ask questions or speak up. You have to be your own advocate.

Absolutely agree! I researched so much that I requested very specific dosages of meds for my final IVF cycle. My RE listened and agreed to try what I was asking for. It ended up being my best cycle ever (high retrieval, high fertilization, and even had embryos make it to freeze).

This 100% when you are navigating the world of IF you need to do your research and be your own advocate. Also go with your gut..if something or someone (i.e. an RE or clinic) doesn't feel right then move on.
