Daycare rant- am I crazy?
DD recently started daycare. When I went to pick her up today, she was lying in her crib screaming her head off. No one was tending to her. I picked her up as soon as I walked in and she calmed down immediately. She just wanted someone to hold her. There were 3 other babies in the room (1 was asleep). None of them were crying. There were 2 staff members in the room.
I didn't say anything while I was there but I'm livid. DH says I'm being ridiculous because they can't pay attention to her constantly. True, but why on earth would you be caring for the children who aren't crying and ignoring the one who is? The assistant was with the baby who was asleep.
Not only am I paying a fortune, but dd is an active baby and needs stimulation. The only reason I have her in full time is because I work from home half the week and felt I wasn't paying enough attention to her while I worked. She could scream in her crib here for free (except she wouldn't because that's called neglect).
Am I being unreasonable? Has anyone else walked into their baby being ignored while screaming? I'm flucking fuming.

Daycare rant- am I crazy?
I would be very upset too if I were you.
I also happen to work at a daycare (OOS) in the infant room. Our ratio is 1:4. You say there were 2 teachers with 4 babies total... Even better!
So, if one teacher was holding the sleeping baby what was the other teacher doing? I could see if there was only one staff member and they were changing a diaper and couldn't get to the crying baby at that moment.
Go talk to the director. Explain what happened. Let them be aware of what goes on. I'm sorry this happened to you.

I am with you, and probably would have carried the baby out of there and never gone back lol.
You need to address it, for sure, and if you're not satisfied with the outcome I'm sure there are plenty of other daycares out there.

I wouldn't be upset if there aren't any other issues. You walked in and only saw a split second. You don't know how long your DD was crying. Maybe I'm different but I didn't jump the second my DS cried and since you walked in you only saw a few seconds of the situation.

I agree with this. It was only a brief snapshot... I would be livid if it was a pattern.

Same here. Maybe the other babies were crying hysterical and they just calmed them down. I'd see if a pattern develops.

This. I would be upset bc it's upsetting to see your child sad in the first place and no one tending to her. I would've spoken with the teacher though. You can't make judgement on what you just saw for a moment. She could've just woken up or they were about to get her. Talk to her teachers first thing in the morning about the situation. The more you stay in communication with the teachers the better. This way they get to know you much better and your DD and her needs.

I would be pissed too but I would have to know more about the situation. I would 100% talk to the director. As another said, you're seeing a very brief portion of the day . . . But if your gut is telling you it's not a good situation, pull out.

This.
I LOVE my children's day care, but sometimes babies have to cry for a few minutes. You don't know what was going on in that moment. Sometimes babies are just fussy and they can't carry fussy babies all day. My 1 year old would be carried and cuddled all day if she had her way. I have to let her cry at home, and I'm ok if day care lets her cry for a few mins. They certainly don't leave her crying for longer than a minute or 2 and I've never seen another baby cry for longer than that.
My DS is 3 years old and day care was the best thing I've done for him. He's so well adjusted, already had friends, and has learned so much. I'd give it more time b/c you said you just started day care.
If it doesn't feel right after a few more weeks, then look to change. With DS, he was in an in-home day care at 4 months old. I hated it after a couple of weeks, pulled him out, and got a nanny. At 18 months old we moved and he went into this current day care. DD went in to this center when she was 11 weeks old, and I don't regret it for a second.

Re: Daycare rant- am I crazy?
if a pattern develops I would def be mad about that... I also think it depends on the age of the baby.
That being said, I was so unhappy with DD's first daycare that I pulled her out of there after two months over stuff like that. Saw a lot of things I was very unhappy about and some safety issues I had BIG concerns about. I was able to put her in a new daycare that opened just as we were looking for a place to move her and I couldnt be happier where we are now!!!
So maybe give it some time. def talk to the director if you have any issues. But trust your gut... if you think something is up with the place etc.. think about finding somewhere else I'm so glad we did!

Daycare rant- am I crazy?
there was no explanition? even if you didn't ask? I would talk to them this morning
I worked in a DC for a few years. there was one kid who cried ALL day long if she wasn't being held. Seriously never stopped crying. But with 7 other kid and 2 teachers she cried b/c well you can't hold 1 kid all day long. Maybe something like that was happening. The mom came in everyday and the baby was crying, but she knew why. Or like others said, maybe she just started crying, or it was a rough afternoon, but the teachers should be telling you everything that happened.

Re: Daycare rant- am I crazy?
Yes in that situation I'd be upset. If she was the only baby crying and there were multiple workers in the room, someone should have picked her up.
I had a VERY colicy baby who cried a lot and I never once came in to her screaming and crying and nobody trying to soothe her.
And this was a room with several infants.
I can understand if all the babies were having melt downs and they were trying their best to calm them all, but there was only so many workers or whatever.
But in the situation you describe, one of them should have picked her up

Re: Daycare rant- am I crazy?
I would be very upset and I shoot from the hip and would have said something while I was there. I can't hold my tongue. Especially when it comes to my kids.
As a mom of 2, I've learned to always trust your mommy gut. It's never ever wrong. If something doesn't sit well with you, it's for a legit reason...even when your dh thinks you're overreacting and crazy...which mine usually does.

I agree. Plus, if they did that when you were present what are they doing when you aren't there...

Daycare rant- am I crazy?
Thanks everyone. Apparently she started crying seconds before I walked in and was her happy smiley self the rest of the day. While I'll never know if that's true, I do trust the head teacher so I'm going to choose to believe her.
Yesterday when I called they said she was cranky, so I don't think they just tell parents what they want to hear (my first question was "well is she in her crib?!") Also, when I picked her up (unexpectedly early) she was sleeping in the teacher's arms.
We're giving it a second chance, though now I realize they lump the infants in with the 1-2 year olds during early drop off and late pickup, which I'm not a fan of but is apparently very common?

Yes this is normal for daycare at the beginning and end of days when teachers shifts are ending and they have to keep the ratio.

Re: Daycare rant- am I crazy?
Awful but your DH is right. We went to look at 3 highly recommended daycares, babies were crying at everyone of them. We also walk through a daycare to get to another building all week and there are always babies screaming. Daycare is definitely not for us bc I can't bear the thought. They really can't carry the babies all day, but as a Mom it seems wrong. Have you thought of having a nanny care for baby?

These daycare workers can not jump when a baby cries. My DB had colic and I was told that they can't deal with one baby one on one all day

If we have another incident we will be getting a nanny.
The issue isn't that she was crying, its that there were 3 perfectly calm babies (one sleeping in his crib, one relaxing in a swing and the other playing on the floor alone), and neither staff member was trying to soothe her. They were not changing diapers, feeding, etc. They weren't doing anything. The head teacher said she started the second before I walked in. I have my doubts but I can't argue something I didn't see so I'm going to believe her.

Have you ever thought of sending your child to a daycare that has a live camera feed so you can watch them?
