Does it matter what side of the fence faces your yard?
We are havinvg our stockade fence replaced and right now the nice side is facing our neighbors. However, they have a pool in their yard and although my kids are young and would not climb the fence right now, we are thinking about the future. We dont plan on being here much longer but you never know. So does it matter if we now have the nice flat side facing our yard?

Check with your town. Each town has their own rules. I know in a lot of towns if your neighbor has a pool and there is no existing fence they would be required to put the good side facing out so someone wouldn't be able to climb over the fence into their yard. In this case your not the pool owner but the town still may have requirements

I think part of the reason the good side typically faces it is bc otherwise the workers would need to be in your neighbors yard to install it. Do your neighbors have a separate fence around just the pool?

Its an above ground and they do have a fence around it andnthe ladder gets put up, but i dont believe the ladder is locked in place and they leave the ladder down most of the time once they open the pool. Either way the workers will need to be in our yard and the neighbors yard to install it.

I'm pretty sure you have to give them the good side

I don't know any specific town laws but I always thought you have to have the "good" side face out. I assumed it was because the other side is less attractive and you're forcing your neighbors to have that line their property but that was just my thinking, could be totally wrong.

This was my understanding as well.

I also thought it was a preventative to having your neighbors being able to climb the fence into your yard....

Why don't fences just have both sides nice? Maybe I'm dense, lol

My guess is that it would cost more?

You can get them with both sides being nice but it's more money. Stockade has the rails in the back and it's way cheaper.

Does it matter what side of the fence faces your yard?
Thanks everyone! I had a few fence companies here and they all told me the neighbor is responsible for having and maintaining a fence with th "climable" side to them since they have a pool. The fence is in bad shape and needs to be replaced asap. DH went over there to talk to them about splitting the cost of the fence and they are "thinking about it". Either way we will replace it but the climable side will be facing them. Now I hope they do the right thing and split it with us. If we were nasty neighbors we can call the town, because they are completely out of code right now, and they'd have to pay the whole 1150 to have it replaced..... but we aren't. On top of the fence falling apart, our dogs are also constantly going at each other through the fence slats that are broken and their dogs constantly stick their noses though the fence when my kids are out playing.

I don't know what town you reside in but be advised that pool fence zoning differs by township. Some require just the pool surround to be fenced, some require just the property and others require the pool surround and property.

Our village requires the yard be fenced, not just the pool.
