Tell me about crawlspace / house with no basement?
What are the cons of having a crawlspace?
Would you buy a house with no basement? Why not?
I never wanted a house south of Merrick Rd, or without a basement, but we saw something interesting. Has a lot of space.

Re: Tell me about crawlspace / house with no basement?
I grew up in a house with no basement, and when we moved we got a house with a crawl basement. Since I never had a basement, I don't miss it.
DH does miss having a basement. But we have an easily accessible attic and a garage so I do not find storage to be an issue. Our house has enough living space. I also feel like I would keep a lot of stuff I didn't need if I had more storage.

We don't have a basement but a 3 level split (splanch style) we have a crawl space- I don't mind it. It's the length of our house and we organized it into labeled bins. I feel it helps keep us organized. We also have a walk up attic as well we use and have a garage so for me I don't feel my house is lacking storage

The storage space is great, but for me, the other huge benefit of having a basement is running utilities. I can run network, electrical, water, hvac ducts, etc., very easily with a basement.

I don't have a basement. I've always had one until now. I'm fine with it. DH would rather have one. We have plenty of storage in the attic and garage and shed.

I agree...my husband wouldn't look at houses without a basement for this reason. I also liked the ability to create more living space without changing the footprint or add a story onto the house.

I grew up in a high ranch w/ no basement. We used the attic, shed, and garage for storage space. I guess I wouldn't mind so as long as I had somewhere to store things.

I grew up with a basement but here in NC not many homes have them, I definitely wish I did

if it is south of merrick road AND has no basement, I personally would not purchase it. Higher chance of possible flooding/water damage if another big storm like Sandy happens

For me its a storage thing, yes, but also a square footage thing as well. If you are buying a smaller home a basement can be remodeled and gives you the same amount of square footage as the first floor of your home (at no additional tax rate charge lol). For me that is valuable.

This. DH talked me out of a house I LOVED because of no basement for this reason. Seeing how much it has been used in the hose we did buy, now I understand. Plus having the storage (in addition to the garage and full attic) is really nice.

If there is no other practical storage, I would not buy a slab or crawlspace. We love the extra space, hands down. Plus, on a slab, you may have to rip up the floors for repairs, leaks, etc. We would never buy a house without a basement.

For us personally we didn't even look at homes that didn't have a basement. I grew up with one and we always used it for entertaining, My husband grew up in a levitt home without a basement and it was also a must for him.

i would not want a basement south of merrick. If there is flooding everything in your basement is destroyed. As long as there is enough living space and storage space I don't think you will miss it.

This. If you are thinking of moving to a house south of Merrick road, then I would not want a basement. I live south of merrick road, do not have a basement, and have plenty of storage. Plus, we did not get flooded during Sandy. Any one I know in the area with a basement did get flooded. I didn't grow up with a basement and my DH was a little nervous at first, but our house has good closet space, and a 2 car garage.
