Tell me something unique about your house!
I have a really old house and we have a built in ironing board in the kitchen wall. It's the cutest thing!
ETA: Thanks for sharing your stories! I love reading what everyone wrote! How cool!

We have a really old house too but there's nothing that cool!
All the floors do bend towards the center of the house - so much that we have to prop up some of the furniture! We also have a "witches bend" in our chimney. We didn't know why it was so crooked until our contractor said it was superstition to keep witches out!
Oh, and we have an 1800's barn on our property line that is a listed building and can't be pulled down.

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
Ummm.... DH and I rent the bottom floor of a really really old 2-family. We only have 1 closet in the hallway. No closet in the BR, nothing.
Don't know if it qualifies ad "unique", but it sure is a pain in the butt!

Would two fireplaces count??
Oh, and that it backs onto acres and acres of town land so it looks like we have an estate but it isn't ours

I have navy/gold/dark green (all mixed in) wallpaper in the upstairs bedroom. It's probably the most hidous wallpaper I have EVER seen. We did not renovate the upstairs yet.

When we built a wall and did some renovations, we put the date of the work on the 2 by 4's, and we stashed a picture of us in the wall we built..... It's all hidden now, but if this wall is ever taken down or renovated, they'll find us!

We have a really old house too. Its a bungalo style. We love it! All the floors are original and the wood is beautiful. There are some repairs where it doesn't look so nice, but oh well.
We also have a vintage cooking stove in our kitchen. I love it!
We have an enclosed front porch with all windows. In the summer it's great!
We have a staircase leading to the upsatirs that curves around, its real pretty.
Can ya tell I really like my house?

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
My husband has lived in all 3 bedrooms in this house at some point in his life. He started out in the same room we now use as a nursery, he then moved to the bigger bedroom when his brother was born (as my daughter did also) and now we use the master bedroom.
He's also had the same phone number his whole life. We never changed it when we bought the house.
Before we redid the kitchen, it had a breadbox built into the wall. But the door had been lost over the years, so it was just this funny looking formica box in the wall.
ETA: I forgot that we have this hideous brick wall in our den. Tan brick - yuck. Can't wait to redo that room.

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
When we picked up the carpet to redo the livingroom wood floors, we discovered that the floor has like 100 nails driven into the wood. I freaked out at first, but after it was sanded and poly'ed, it looks so awesome... like an old farmhouse floor, very vintage.
Oh, and I have a dining room light fixture that is not worked by the designated switch on the D.R. wall. In fact, my brother who is an electrician cannot find the power source to this fixture from any outlets in the D.R or L.R. So, he had to rig up a switch and attach it to the fixture itself (or else i would have to break the sheetrock to really fix the problem) so I can turn the light on and off.
So as I sit there and flip the wall switch on and off on and off and nothing happens, I can only picture someone down the block's garage door opening and closing on their car... Like that commercial...
Not really unique, more like weird...

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
my whole house is unique. It's old too and the original farm house on the block. I have no land but everyone else on the block has land.
There are angles in every room and high ceilings and moulding that you cannot find anymore.
We loved in because it didn't look like every house we saw. It's almost Tudor looking but it's really a colonial farm house with cape characteristics.

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
we have a closet in the master bedroom that has this old ( our house is 1937) leaded window in it, everyone thinks that the close is a bathroom or another room when they walk in....also our bathroom has original sconces around the mirror and therefore theres is no light switch ( just switches on each scones) so when people walk into our bathroom they are always looking for a lightswitch

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
My house was built in the 1930's and we have fireplaces in every room, cast iron ones that are really beautiful. We have a coal shed and our garage is made of asbestos!!! (as our all of the garages of all of the houses built in our neighborhood at the same time) Oh, and we don't own the land that our house is built on, its leased from a family and we pay yearly for the land...£4 a year, thats about $8. The family own miles of land around and probably make about £4 a year from thousands of houses...
Oh and we have NO closets. Just one in the kitchen that holds the boiler. Makes for awkward storage. We have a teensy tiny bedroom (where the baby sleeps) and its about 6"X10"...its traditionally called a box room. And the previous owners got money from our local council in 1991 to update the house and build an extension...so technically, they updated the house for free.
There are lots of houses around me that have outside toilets and no central heating. Its very common, most houses in our neighborhood (the older ones) only had indoor toilets installed in the 70's..until then people did their business outside in all weather!!!

Re: Tell me something unique about your house!
our house was built in the 1980's & the only thing that is truly unique about the house itself is the way they did the second story addition in the 1990's. Their architect must have been a beginner beause they are things about the framing & the way they built the stairs that are totally weird. You can't really tell now but when we bought the house it had no sheetrock so we were able to see it.
The most unique thing about our location is we live across the street from a private spring water, natural lake that is owned by our community. There's something about looking out over water that is awesome. Also we live in the pine barrens & our area has been called "Icy Hollow" because it is typically 5 degrees colder than the rest of Long Island because of the forest.
I think our house is becoming more interesting as we add stuff, now we have a greenhouse & a chicken coop in our yard.
I was always sure we'd buy an older home with more character, but if we are successful in buying the bungelow next door we will own that last original house with no heat from 1945-1950 in our community.
