Fresh Transfer vs FET

So the more my hubby and I research and discuss doing PGS, the more we are opposed to it even though our RE recommends if due to my age(39) and recurrent miscarriage. We are starting our 1st IVF cycle in June. If we did PGS, we would have to freeze the embies and transfer in August. My RE had mentioned that there is a slight improvement in pregnancies rates with FET. Since we are most likely NOT doing PGS, what are your thoughts on doing a fresh vs frozen cycle? I guess we will have to discuss this with my RE.

Re: Fresh Transfer vs FET

The slight improvement in pregnancy rates with an FET is largely due to the fact that the body has a chance to recover from the toll IVF takes on the body (bloat, high estrogen levels..). It's a transfer that can be more controlled, as its SOLE purpose is the transfer, since the egg production and retrieval has already taken place.

That said, a fresh cycle has benefits too. For the cycle that worked for me, we did a fresh because one of my issues was related to lining which is typically best in a fresh cycle and that theory held true for me.

May I ask, why are you opposed to PGS of your RE is suggesting it? As long as it's within your budget, there's nothing to lose from a little extra info. After years and years or infertility and too many losses to track, my DS came from a cycle with CGH (genetic testing, similar to PGS) and a fresh transfer.

How far along were you with your miscarraiges? Did you both get testing to see if you are carriers of any genetic conditions?

I am just trying to figure out why an FET would be an alternative to PGS. If you do a FET yes, your chances are improved, but if there is something genetically wrong with your embryos, you wouldn't likely know by looking at a 5 day embryo and you would miscarry anyway.

If it were ONLY your age I might consider the FET route, but with reoccurring miscarriages, unless the doctor was thinking it could be explained by something medical, PGS seems like a solid investment.

That is just my opinion though.

I wish you so much luck and success!!! Chat Icon

Re: Fresh Transfer vs FET

My first IVF transfer we got pregnant but miscarried. We are going to do a FET in June sometime hopefully. I didn't know that an FET increases your chances, because I got pregnant with just one cycle of IVF. Good luck!!Chat Icon

Re: Fresh Transfer vs FET

My 1st miscarriage was at 8 weeks and then I had 3 chemicals. I am just so confused about the PGS. My doctor strongly recommends it for that reason and my age which he feels is causing poor egg quality. I have read up so much on PGS and even looked through the paperwork that my hubby & I would have to sign from Reprogenetics that does the testing and there is such potential for false positives and damage to the embryos. Someone posted a link to articles about it last week too!
The reason that I ask about the FET vs fresh is that as of right now my RE has us scheduled to do PGS and therefore we would be doing a FET in Aug. The embies would be frozen after their biopsy and we would wait for the testing results. If we decide against the PGS testing, I guess we wouldn't have to freeze the embies and we could just do a fresh transfer. What I was asking is if anyone had better luck with an FET vs a fresh transfer and your opinions about one vs the other.
Sorry for the long post!

Sorry for the long post!

There's too much to take into account to really go based on what worked better for other people.

Did these people do genetic testing?
Did they do a fresh transfer followed by the FET, or was everything frozen?
Were there egg quality issues?
Lining issues?
Was the FET following a miscarriage from a fresh transfer?

The list goes on...

I think in this case it's best to look at your unique situation and figure out based on YOUR stats and YOUR history and YOUR re recommendation, what would work best.Chat Icon
