Gas fireplaces

Hi everyone. We just bought a house that has a gas fireplace that you turn on and off with a wall switch. We noticed that a small flame remains after turning it off. Is this normal? We are not familiar with gas fireplaces and there is no manual. Will it eventually go out? We turned the gas off to shut it down and haven't turned it on again to test it.

Thanks for any input!

It isn't dangerous for it to stay lit? To me it feels like I'm leaving my stove on low!

Also, can we relight it ourselves or we definitely have to call someone? Who do you call for that? Thanks!

Definitely not dangerous. Nearly all gas stoves, fireplaces, water heaters and furnaces have pilot lights, and have had them for decades.

There is usually a relighting process for devices with pilot lights. My furnace has a process written on the inside of the front cover. Sometimes it goes out if there is a breeze along the basement floor or something. It's not dangerous if the light goes out. The gas valve only stays open if it is hot. As soon as the flame goes out, the valve mechanism cools down, and the gas doesn't come through any more.
My stove is similar. I take a long lighter and hold it near the valve, and when it heats up, the gas comes out and lights.

You can usually relight it easily yourself, if you know how. Also, you want to make sure that the gas is turned off to that line if you turn it off just to make sure you don't have a small leak of gas.

Call whoever services your gas. We have propane so it's the propane company that comes and services our fireplace.
