Family moving to LI. HELP!
My family have a potential Move to NY. We currently live in London, UK. We have two daughters ages 3 and 5 and two small dogs. I have no idea where to start, what area, schools etc. We are looking for a nice family area, with parks, good schools (private) and generally an outdoor lifestyle. Any help appreciated

Family moving to LI. HELP!
Welcome! I'm presuming it's a move for work so where will someone be working? Long island is long, hence the name, so we wouldn't want to suggest areas that are too far from work.

Re: Family moving to LI. HELP!
Thanks for your reply It's still very early stages and I suspect we will only move next year. However having young children and bringing dogs we need to be prepared :) My husband will be working in Manhattan so he will have to commute to the city. I really have no idea where to even begin. There seems to be many family areas , and googling is just confusing me more :)

Welcome! My husband commutes to Manhattan and up until I had kids, I did too. You'd probably want to look mostly in Nassau county and western Suffolk county. There are a lot of good school districts on Long Island. Check out mlsli.com to get an idea of houses and prices. Any questions about towns and school districts just come back and ask.

Family moving to LI. HELP!
Welcome! If you are planning on moving to Long Island and your husband will be working in Manhattan then I would suggest Nassau County. Suffolk would be kind of far commuting wise. If he will be taking the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) then I suggest a town that isn't too far from the LIRR stations. I know about a lot of towns in Nassau County so if you have any questions send me a message.

For commuting to Manhattan you want to be in Nassau County or western Suffolk county. That's still a very large area with many different school districts. If you can pinpoint some fun getting that are most important to you it will be easier to narrow down some areas to focus your search.

Re: Family moving to LI. HELP!
Ok so things I'm looking for in the neighbourhood: Good schools (as mentioned) A family feel neighbourhood. Preferable a short drive or walk to schools and activities. Girls at the moment do ballet, horse riding and swimming classes. I hope to continue these. Parks with playgrounds and that are dog friendly. I am Jewish (my husband not), we are not religious but a small Jewish community would be nice (not vital) Bottom line is we're looking for a really nice neighbourhood with a family feel so we can meet other parents and kids can make new friends. :)

I think the major question is how much money do you want to spend for your monthly housing.
That will be a huge factor in where you have as options.

Family moving to LI. HELP!
I live in Plainview and highly recommend it. I take the train to Manhattan every day from the next town over (Hicksville) which is a major LIRR station so lots of trains. There is a strong Jewish community here with many temples at all religious levels to choose from. Tons of families with kids and dogs everywhere. Great school district. Tons of activities for kids. There is a great Jewish Community Center in the town. My husband and I moved here after getting married 6 years ago and have been very happy. We have an almost 5 year old son.
There are also houses at many different price points. Plenty of smaller ranch houses and plenty of larger colonial houses. And they're all mixed up on the blocks so it's all very inclusive.

Don't come to LI at all. Move to Queens- Forest Hills and Bayside in particular have sizable Jewish communities. Everything is in walking distance and the commute to Manhattan can't be beat, especially in Forest Hills.

People have mentioned some great towns. All have great public schools, but if you're looking for a private school I work at a private Jewish school-if you'd like more info you could send me a message :)

Family moving to LI. HELP!
Floral Park is the westernmost part of nassau county, LI, and is a very close commute into manhattan for work. Alot of people who work in the city opt to live here because of the distance to work and the amazing school district. There is a village pool you can join, and was just renovated last year. They offer swimming lessons there in the summers, and have a good swim team too. I know you're not from Ireland, but alot of families have been moving to Floral Park from there!
ETA: it's mostly a Catholic/Christian neighborhood, so while I have covered most of your wishlist, it's not really considered a Jewish Community. If that is something that is very important to you, Great Neck would be a good option since it is also a town that borders Queens (Like Floral Park), and would be a close commute into the city

Port Washington hands down. It's got a great feel, great commute to NY and a Jewish community but it's also diverse. great schools, great parks, close to NYC, etc.

Re: Family moving to LI. HELP!
More affordable* areas with Jewish communities - Oceanside, Bellmore, parts of Merrick.
More expensive - Five Towns (Hewlett is less religious than Woodmere/Lawrence/Cedarhurst), Great Neck, Roslyn, parts of Merrick.
All have good schools. Lawrence-Woodmere Academy in Five Towns is one of the only prep schools on the South Shore of Nassau County (it's a private school.)
*Relatively speaking. We live in a modest starter home with an updated kitchen in Oceanside, 1700 sq ft, 3 bed 2 bath and we paid under $400k 3 years ago.
