Jericho
Oyster Bay (longer commute)
Syosset
Woodbury
Roslyn (longer commute)
Great Neck (sefardic Jews)
Plainview/JFK school
Five towns (more religious)

Woodbury Jewish Center
Oyster Bay Jewish Center
JCC on Rosyln Rd.

what the poster mentioned above are all great areas, but some surrounding towns are just as nice. The ones above are very high in taxes etc.

The following are nice to look at too
Wantgh, Levittown, Hicksville, Plainedge, Bethpage, Bellmore are nice areas with Jewish Populations. East Meadow is also close to LIRR
They are also close to the LIRR for travel

In my opinion, Port Washington would prob be the strongest contender with your criteria ( of course that's not knowing your budget as its also an expensive area). Great train line, quick commute to the city, Jewish population, great schools, parks and one of the few Long Island towns with a true "Main Street"/downtown area that's walkable.

Other Nassau towns that could fit:

South shore: Oceanside, merrick, bellmore
North shore/ mid island: plainview/ old Bethpage, Syosset, Jericho

If you are willing for a longer commute ( about an hour to the city) but want more land/bigger house for less $: Dix hills or Commack

I would avoid the 5 Towns area (Lawrence, wood mere, Hewlett), you said you weren't religious and this area is heavily orthodox, even turning ultra orthodox- most of the main shopping area is closed on Saturdays.

I also think Port Washington would be a good bet for you. Meets all your criteria! There's a range of housing as well (it can be super expensive but also reasonable in some parts).

Also, coming to Long Island, there is little need for a private school since the public schools are so good. That's one of the reasons for such high taxes!

Because you mentioned horseback riding, you may want to be relatively close to the equine centers. These are mostly on the north shore, so as previous posters mentioned, Jericho, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Woodbury, Roslyn, Great Neck, Plainview, Glen Head, Brookville, Old Westbury and Greenvale.

There is also New York Equestrian Center in Hempstead lake park which is close to Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Merrick ( south shore towns)

Family moving to LI. HELP!

Look into Floral Park- the Nassau side. We have been here since Feb. of 2015 and we love it here. It is a literal 3 minute drive from my house to the Queens border, easy train ride into Manhattan- although you do have to transfer, it is not a direct run. My oldest is starting K in the fall but all of our neighbors have experience with the schools and say they are great. Tons of families with kids, now that summer is here all the kids on my block are outside playing in each other's yards, riding bikes, the parents are all hanging out, until 7 or 8 at night. That may not be for everyone but I love the neighborhood feel. Definitely check it out and best of luck!

Again thanks to everyone's replies and happy to hear more.
I will be going through all the areas mentioned.
I definitely like the sound of a neighbourhood
Life, kids playing and riding bikes outside and neighbours socialising , short walk to schools (or drive;) ) , parks etc

I must be the only crazy one who doesn't feel comfortable giving out such information (especially where religious communities are) without wondering if this is someone with bad intentions parading as an innocent mom coming from abroad and wanting information.
I'm probably the only suspicious, jaded, paranoid one out there but I just feel that if Londonmom wants this info., she can get it some other way. There are a lot of areas in London with many expats as well as other ways to gain this info. which I won't get into detail about here. Google is confusing sometimes but it's not the only way.
This is an probably innocent post but I won't help give information about our communities (especially where people tend to be more religious) to an outsider. JMO.

I don't think someone with ill intentions would use lifamilies.com as a way to get intel. I am a really paranoid person but IMO you are being wayyyyy over the top.

Also want to mention - Londonmom you asked for private schools - but if i remember correctly, private school in the UK is really the same as our public schools? (i used to live in the UK but its been a while and i might be remembering incorrectly)

Yes from all the replies here see that the school district in Long Island is brilliant and private schooling is not actually necessary :)

Re: Family moving to LI. HELP!

Why are you looking in LI as opposed to Westchester county (or even, parts of New Jersey)?? Depending on where the jobs in Manhattan are located, the commute on the Metro North is much nicer than the LIRR. LI is geographically land-locked and not typically viewed as the 'go to' place to live because theres only 2 ways off LI - through all the traffic jams on the parkways and bridges in Queens, or the ferries going to CT in Suffolk county. If you or your husband are going to be working on the East side of Manhattan, commuting to Grand Central via Metro North will be much easier than dealing w the transfer at Penn Station. I am not saying this to knock LI, but just curious why you would look at it over Westchester given that many of the towns in Westchester are much more accessible to NYC mass transit options and allow you to travel to MA, PA, NJ without needing to cross a bridge or idle in a traffic jammed highway.

I think the major question is how much money do you want to spend for your monthly housing.

That will be a huge factor in where you have as options.

This is very important. Many of the towns mentioned on this thread can be very Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also factor in, after a price for a house, the taxes in most of the areas mentioned are high.

Yes that's a factor too. However until we are settled we will probably rent. Not sure what the rental market is like.

I agree with this, which is why I mentioned Queens. Westchester, on a whole, is pricier than LI (it's the ONLY reason we moved to LI) but not more so than many of the towns mentioned in this thread. Southern CT would also be an option. I know little about Jersey, but have colleagues who live there and rave about the affordability and schools.

Thanks for this, we are open to all
Options at this stage. As mentioned before we are right at the early stages of planning and literally are starting with very little knowledge. Obviously at some point I will need to come over and look at areas but for now just gathering information on different options.
