How much to save for a move OOS?
If you have a job lined up down there and $$ from the sale of a home up here, I probably wouldn't save anything extra.

Save to use for what? Moving expenses? We use ABF, which is a u-pack company and it saves some money. We also used the same company to ship one of the cars. I think you can get a quote on their website (depends on how much stuff you have to move).

Re: How much to save for a move OOS?
I would get some quotes for a whole house move. If you have a new job lined up are you being paid for the move? I can tell you eleven years ago to move from LI to NJ they charged my husbands company about 2800 for seventy miles. We moved with a lot more stuff three blocks away and paid 1200. This included packing both times. The second move had almost twice as much furniture because we had kids and toys and their furniture for the second move.
Are you going to be driving your cars down too? For a job move you can itemize costs on taxes, so keep your receipts.
If you pack yourselves and fill the pod or uhall yourself it will cost less than if you have someone else pack and move you. I rented a one way uhall for a day from LI to NJ and that was 160. It included up to 250 miles.

We moved to LI from NC about 17 years ago. We used North American Van Lines to pack and move our entire place. It was around $5k back then. I imagine it's more now.

Re: How much to save for a move OOS?
We moved south a year ago and it cost us about 5k to move (moving company.) We did all the packing ourselves but we had a lot of stuff. Best thing I did was mark my boxes with different color duct tape. I color coded each room and then numbered the piece of tape. I made a short hand list of what was generally in each box. It made moving/unpacking much easier for everyone.

How much to save for a move OOS?
My cousins husbands job relocated them from California to NY and then back to California again. Each move was roughly 8k both times they negotiated to have the move fully paid

Re: How much to save for a move OOS?
We moved OOS. DH's company paid for the move but if that's not the case I would save for the cost of the moving truck (ours was 6-7K) as that was significant. Are you renting or buying? If renting I think you'd need a security deposit + rent. If buying, consider the size of your home. We built a home more than twice the size of our LI home and we needed to buy so many things. Also, I remember we had to buy so many cleaning supplies, things like garbage cans, laddder, bath mats, shower curtains, etc. If you're moving to a different climate, think clothing costs, especially if you have kids. Ours needed so much new clothes bc our warm weather lasts 9-10 months vs 3 months in NY. You have to register new vehicles and that can be hundreds. Our fees here were more than in NY. Also, we shipped our vehicles and flew down so that that cost $.
There are lots of things you don't even think about. A lot depends on how you want to handle things. Moving truck expenses can be more or less depending on whether you drive the truck yourself, etc. Just make sure that you save more than you think you'll need bc lots sneaks up on you.

Re: How much to save for a move OOS?
DH and I are moving OOS at the end of the month. We're renting for a year, and are moving via UBox & ship w/Uhaul (we've decided to purchase new furniture when we get settled in, so we're not taking much with us).
Total costs of our move is $4k. We've budgeting an additional $2k for incidentals and gas/tolls/hotel accomodations for the drive down, etc.

Re: How much to save for a move OOS?
About $5k for a 2-3 bedroom house to go to Fl. With movers. So it can go to low $4k anf some higher than $5k. Depends on actual amount to move. Plus you need to count if you are driving, gas, tolls. just the move. Then you need go buy stuff for the place (blinds, curtains, new locks, etc....)
