after aftercare need

DS starts K in Sept. We have him in aftercare at school which ends a half hour too early for us. We are having our moms pick up, but that requires us to drive to/from wherever they are to get him home. And none of the local daycares have openings later/no transport ion to from our district.

So we are thinking of paying someone to do pick ups, drive DS home, stay until we get home. probably a half hour a day 4-5 days per week.

Questions are:

What would you pay that person?
And who would want that job? the hours stink!! i was thinking maybe a repsonsible high school senior or college student as the school is not walking distance from home.

I would consider asking one of the moms whose child is in after care with yours to pick yours up with hers and keep him for a half hour.

If you end up with a college kid or high school kid, I would pay them $10 a day for the half hour.

after aftercare need

Did you talk to the school aftercare people? Maybe you can pay one of them to stay the 1/2 and then just pick him up at school.

It didn't start yet so no I haven't, but I need to have a plan in case they say no. I would imagine insurance will not allow it as the building closes at 6 and parents who are late are given a warning and then asked to leave

Re: after aftercare need

My boys do before / aftercare at the daycare center they have gone to forever. They bus within our district, and the particular daycare, although I dodn't need it, is open until 7 or 7:30

I think it's like, $50 a month more, but for me, necessary as they open 1/2 hour before school before care, and close 1.5 hours after ......

something to look into in your area.

I'd think you'd have to pay at least $50 a week for a HS/college kid to do that

We do this as well. The hours are a little better than the school offered one when school is in session and the hours and prices are a lot better for care when school is closed.

I paid my old neighbor's daughter to do it. She was 16 when she started. I paid her $100 a week and it was at most an hour.

It sucked, but I needed it, so I did it. I was paying 2x the amount a month for her than it was for aftercare.

Re: after aftercare need

Many in our neighborhood have babysitters pick up after school & take to activities & then home. It's more time (3 hours)... But the kid gets activities (unfortunately you have to pay for them) & it's easier to find someone interested. If you aren't offering enough you get a bad babysitter (unfortunately, I've lived this).

If you have friendly neighbors with kids... You may be able to pay them to carpool your kid & watch for a while. This yields lots of problems though...

I've heard of coworkers using multiple college students. There have been problems with them not showing up in cases.

Cheapest & best option would be to have moms pick up and take locally to sports or to their home.

The only before after care program outside the school at a daycare in my area is full. We are waitlisted and I asked about it in February...

Re: after aftercare need

We don't have any other options in our town except for Scope. I would ask a friend if DS could just go home with them, at least a few days, and someone else another few days. You can offer them a fair rate.

I have no experience but maybe $10-$20 a day? Pick up at school and stay at their house for 30 min right? Its adds up when you look at it on a monthly basis!
