Thumb sucking
DS is 3 months old. He won't take to the pacifier. For some reason he can't keep a hold on it and just loses it. I've tried many types. Maybe it's from breastfeeding. I'm not so sure. Within the past few days he's discovered his thumb. He's using it to soothe himself and fall asleep. Do I try to put a stop to it and pull it out when he does it or should I just let him be?
With the pacifier you can take it away when it's time to wean. With this I feel like I'll be screwed.

Thumb sucking
My dd pediatrician recommended allowing her to suck her thumb-
He said it was the only thing a child that young can do to self soothe- she was a huge thumb sucker until 4-5 months then just stopped on her own- she never took a pacifier and was EBF.

at that age DEFINITELY let your baby suck their thumb... both my kids were (ack, are!) thumb suckers and were GREAT sleepers because of it. It is a TOUGH habit to break but I think worth it for the first couple of years of soothing!

I would not discourage it at all! My 1st was a thumb sucker & he was amazing! Slept through the night before 8 weeks old. My 2nd loved the paci. After the 2nd night of me getting up & popping that thing back into his mouth all night in between feedings, I tried converting him & showing him that he was able to suck his thumb- didn't want it & we weren't sleeping through the night until almost 11 months old.

My kids are both thumb suckers. There were major advantages when they were babies as far as soothing & not having to worry about pacifiers falling out. Now they're older (3 and 1) and still love their thumb & I want to break the habit. Especially for my older son. But at 3 months old, I would definitely allow it!! They need some way to soothe themselves at that age & the thumb is the most convenient thing.

It's self soothing...definitely let him do it! Also, there's really no way to prevent him from doing it.

My daughter takes a paci and sucks her theme. I try to discourage the thumb sucking since she does well with the paci

I discouraged it with my second because of all the problems with my first... True my second took longer to sleep through the night, but he's a much better sleeper now. I cannot get my 3 year old to stop thumb sucking. NOTHING is working and he has his thumb in his mouth all flipping day. I'd rather deal with a few months of bad sleep than the braces he's going to need, the cuts and deformed skin on his thumb, and the speech problems it has caused.

My son's teeth were slightly pushed out due to the paci but the dentist told us to stop him by 2.5. We bought thumb guards, they worked. His teeth moved back on their own & are perfect. Maybe try those before he gets much older?

His teeth are so pushed out- he sucks SO hard! We bought the thumb guards, but he gets out of them (even after we "hacked" them as per online suggestions). Our doctor suggested to give him things to hold, but he's so stubborn about it and it doesn't work. I hope he never tries drugs... We will be so screwed! I know plenty of kids who just stick at night, but DS1 does it all day every day. I'm desperate for something to get him to stop.
