I have a bunch of friends that live up there. One lives in Groton. It's a nice town. They are very pleased with the schools.
I have other friends that live in Pembroke and Scituate. Their kids aren't in school yet so I don't have any feedback on the districts but the towns are nice.

Thanks but we're FAR from moving.............yet.  Just in the thinking about and planning stages. I feel like there is SO much to consider. Just trying to get an idea about what it will be like living up there. I am excited at the possibility!!!!!!

Hey my brother moved to MA years ago. He bought @4000 square foot home for 500,000 with a ton of property in Rowley, MA. It is about 35 miles from Boston. I love his area.. The houses r further apart n just beautiful! Im not sure about schools there but if u want further info let me kno bc i can always ask him
Wow!! That is a lot of house..............way more house than I have and our mortgage isn't that far off from what he paid!! 
I'll take any info you can get, thank you!! We aren't set on any particular area so the more I can learn about the different towns, the better.

Also, if you guys are looking for cooler weather and more bang for your buck , check out the Indianapolis suburbs. Beautiful area and lots of engineering jobs nearby.

Western MA would be more reasonable, closer to Boston is very similar expense/taxes wise. I lived in NE for a few years. RI is a bit cheaper but schools are not as good-though Warwick is good from what I recall.
Commute and traveling around Boston can be a nightmare just like NY.

We don't want to be super close to Boston, we'd like to be similar in distance to where we are now from NYC which is about an hour. We'd like to be close enough to get into the city if we want but far enough where we have nothing to do with city schools, city traffic, or home prices that are reflective of being right outside of the city. We'd be looking to be within an hour or so of Boston.

We just moved from.long island about a month ago. We are renting for the year to make sure we like the area. All the things that are being said are based on where you are looking. It's a big state and each town and county are different. First off, there is definitely school buses where we are. The house prices are cheaper not crazy cheap though, however taxes are half. I went to a wedding north of Boston earlier this month and traffic was horrendous (Friday afternoon) so we ended up taking a detour and drove through a town called lynnfield and the houses were gorgeous.
That's all I have to offer lol.

Yes, dh has traveled there a lot for business and he says the suburbs are lovely, lots of good shopping and restaurants and extremely friendly people. Check out Carmel, Fishers and zionsville. You can get A HuGE , brand new house for 300 k and taxes under 4000. Highly rated schools too.

I have family in Lexington and they are super happy. Kids both graduated HS already and have gone onto Brown and RIT.
My brother lived in the East Walpole/Norwood area and couldn't wait to get out and move back to CT where they lived before.
My sister went to school in Waltham and lived there for some time after college, but again, moved back to LI because she liked it better.

My SIL/BIL live in Acton.
She teaches high school in Lexington.
He is a partner in a Boston Law Firm. He drives to the commuter rail. It's insanely expensive for him to park in the town lot, everyone pays several hundred dollars a year on top of the rain ticket.
Acton is a slightly cheaper area than Lexington but like others have said, the "average" houses in Lexington are a lot more $$ than comparable houses in Nassau/Suffolk.
From my experience, every town in MA (45 minutes outside of Boston... especially west) will be comparable, if not more expensive, than 45 minutes from NYC (Nassau/Suffolk border).
My BF went to college/worked in Boston for 12 years but had to go as far west as the suburbs of Springfield to find an affordable house (circa 2002). They recently purchased a new construction in Northampton for about 500K.

I grew up in Lexington and would move back there in a heartbeat, as most of my family is there and the school district is excellent. However, Lexington is not that affordable. Over the years, people have been knocking down houses and building McMansions (and driving up housing prices as a result). It has caused a lot of debate in the town. People joke that they need to stop building McMansions and save what's left of affordable housing in the town- this is around the $700K mark for an older home.
Even though I would love to move back home or even a different town in MA, DH doesn't want to because of the amount of snow they get. I don't mind it though!

I asked her. Her taxes are about 17K but she didn' know  (she can afford not to know ) Her house was a new construction when they bought it almost 20 years ago. It's now worth over $1 million, it would probably be about $700-800K here.
Two bedroom condos in Acton (no great amenities like a gym, pool, etc) run in the $200-300K range. Much older homes (pre 1950's, homes closer to a main road and "gut jobs" are in the 600's. Many of the areas west of Boston, along the commuter line have seen skyrocketing home values in the last 20 years. For the same home, they are now more $$$ than LI, event he same distance to the cities.

A couple of years ago we almost moved to Framingham, MA. We didn't because my husbanded ended up rejecting the job offer that would have caused us to make the move. We never did do the tremendous amount of research that is required when one is relocating, BUT last night we saw an episode of House Hunters that was taking place in Framingham and apparently, that town is on the list of top places to live in US. Who knew!
