SIRM - NYC- Dr Geoffrey Sher
So one of the options just presented to me by my doctor after 3 failed IVF attempts (2 of which were PGS tested embryos) us to see a Dr Sher in NYC and explore immunological issues/testing. Although not supported by randomized, controlled scientific studies, when I asked my dr if he would hypothetically advise his daughter to look into that route he said, 'yes.' Thoughts? Experiences? Tx so much.

Yes, I say explore all avenues.
You wouldn't see Dr. Sher. But all of the Doctors in the NYC office are great. Dr. Tortoriello and Dr. Wang are both great. I think Dr. Wang used to be in Westchester or CT but may be back in NYC.
Set up a consult to meet with them to go over your history. They will then send you for bloodwork; most of it done there. The rest will be at any lab. And see what they come up with in their findings.
I just read your last post that you had PGD testing done. So this one you just did most recently was a normal embryo and the one you have left is a normal embryo??

Re: SIRM - NYC- Dr Geoffrey Sher
Sher is in Las Vegas, I believe. The doctor who runs his NYC branch is Tortoriello. They have a good, strong lab, and they do look into immunological causes without over-medicating to the extent that some do. FYI - the wait to see Tortoriello can be quite long, so you may want to book the consult now just in case. You can always cancel if you change your mind.
I hope you find success, whatever you decide.

SIRM - NYC- Dr Geoffrey Sher
Dr. Sher is not in the NYC office. There are 4 doctors in the NYC office. I had 3 failed transfers elsewhere and then had success at SIRM with Dr. Tortoriello. They do immune testing but very basic. They test for DQ Alpha matches and Natural Killer cells. If you are found to have any of these the protocol is usually Prednisone and Intralipids. At that practice I have seen Dr. Tortoriello and saw Dr. Wang when Dr. T was on vacation. I recommend both of them. Dr. Wang just came back to NYC so he may have a shorter wait. They are very different personality wise. If you are looking for more extensive immune testing you would likely see a reproductive immunologist. I know Braverman in LI does extensive immune testing but its very expensive and Kwak Kim in Chicago. I hear her pricing is much more reasonable. Also I've heard Dr. Kofinas who is in maternal fetal medicine does immune testing too.
I would absolutely do some type of immune testing before you move forward. Best of luck and if you have any questions please ask.

Re: SIRM - NYC- Dr Geoffrey Sher
I love love Dr. T and highly recommend him!!
he is loving, caring and just sends positive vibes anytime I see him...his office staff is also wonderful which helps in this stressful time.
I would make an appointment and have an consult with him...he believes in immune testing but doesnt push it if it not necessary...see what he thinks
GL!!

SIRM - NYC- Dr Geoffrey Sher
Hi all, You are all so supportive and helpful, I really appreciate it. But I actually made a mistake...I just actually looked at the paper my dr gave me and he did not recommend Dr Sher...... The recommendation is for Dr Jonathan Scher! I jumped the gun in my google search just using my memory of the last name from our conversation. Has anyone heard of this Dr Scher? A google search says he's from Mt Sinai. I'm so confused because after reading all about SIRM and then hearing about Dr T from you guys, I was kind of all set to go in that direction.
To Hopelessly Discouraged......Yes, my remaining embryo is PGS tested and I guess considered 'normal' whatever that's worth! I got pregnant with twins initially (not PGS tested) but miscarried after 8 weeks. We heard the heartbeats and everything and it was our very first attempt at IVF so it was super upsetting. Everyone said, "wow at least you know you can get pregnant" (including my RE) so I figured after we tested the remaining embryos we would be good to go. I did a total of 3 retrievals and tested 7 Day 5 embryos. 3 'passed' the test. My first 'tested embryo' implanted but I never made it past 7 weeks. It just didn't grow normally and never really developed a heartbeat (there was a 'flutter'). The second 'tested embryo' (I used heparin this time) didn't implant at all. And here we are now...with one remaining...trying to figure out if we should just put it in and hope for the best, go see this Dr. Scher guy, or look into surragacy.
Thank you all again. Just hearing from you all makes me feel a little better. I'm feeling very old and tired (I'm 41 and my husband is 47) and don't know how much more of this I can take.

SIRM - NYC- Dr Geoffrey Sher
I am sending you hugs. I know you googled the wrong thing, but maybe it was a sign that you should see someone who supports reproductive immunology. We had 3 failed attempts -- 2 were chemicals before moving on to an RI...he got us pregnant.

It was suggested to me by an RE to go see Dr. Jonathan Scher at Mt. Sinai. He also checks for autoimmune issues dealing with recurring miscarriages. I called and he does not take any insurance and it was pricey. Basically I was told he looks at all your records and discusses with you then sends you for various blood tests that get sent to a special lab - I think it was in Chicago but I don't remember. When the results come back he meets with you again to talk about results and how to treat if anything is found. DH and I discussed doing it. However, I ended up getting and staying pregnant so we never got to that point. It was a wait to get an appointment though so call soon if you are interested. Good luck!
