gluten free?

hey

im new to this whole gluten free eating thing....

and although i am feeling 1000% better than I ever have I find most things that are made "specifically gluten free" are kinda yuck

anyone have any favorite products or recommendations that i should be on the lookout for?

the trader joe thread reminded me i should go and check there out.

What kinds of things are you looking for? Dh is gluten free so I cook most things from scratch but I do buy some convenience foods and snacks. Granola bars like kind bars or Luna bars are good on the go snacks. Most lays chips like tostitos and most of the potato chips, boom chikka pop kettle corn, nut thin crackers are regular snacks here.

For quick meals we like barilla pasta, classico sauce, dr.praeger quinoa black bean burgers (dh pours baked beans over them), some Progreso soups, Ortega hard tacos. There are so many options. Aldis has a lot too. We love their cornbread and some of the other baking mixes are good. Tates has great cookies, many I've creams are fine, and of course there's lots of chocolate options! Hershey kisses snickers, most m&ms

The #1 issue with people being GF is that they are looking for processed products that are labeled GF instead of cooking fresh and eating clean. I get that we all need convinience foods but for the most part GF or not eat fruit and veggies, lean meats and fish, nuts and whole grains and some dairy.

Its great that youre feeling better. Are you doing the above as well?

My favorite gluten free packaged bread products are Udi's brand- most of the Udi's line is good. Aleia's bread crumbs and cookie are good- some of the cookies are too sweet for my taste and a bit crumbly. I use bob's red mill gluten free oats. Tate's products are very good but again I find the a bit sweet for my taste.
My dad's cookies are by far my favorite line of cookies especially the black and white cookies. I do not know where you are located but By the way bakery is AMAZING--they have three locations two in Manhattan and one in Hastings on Hudson. The bakery is also dairy free and kosher.
Trader Joe's rice pasta is great- It is also inexpensive. Tinkyada brown rice pasta is also good.
I use cup for cup flour for baking and cooking and so far I have not found a recipe it does not work for--I bake a lot of my own foods including bread- the flying apron bakery has good cook books for bread.
Also I use a lot of paleo recipes--they are grain free.

Your taste buds will change the longer you are gf lol My kids like gf Barilla pasta but I prefer the trader joes brown rice pasta. We eat a lot of veggies but watch the frozen ones. Sometimes they have gluten in them so read the labels. Yes I know how crazy that sounds. I make most of the baked goods myself but we do get UDI bread from Costco ($7 for a real size loaf!). We use it for sandwiches and french toast. Aldi has good snicker doodle cookies and chocolate brownie cookies under their Live G Free label. I have Lara Bars to grab in case of a snack emergency. They are dates and nuts. Hamburger rolls and french bread I have found need to be made from scratch the store ones are just so dry! Breadcrumbs we use 4c gluten free plain. Hope that helps!

My son eats honey nut Chex, kefir (yogurt smoothie w/ probiotics) Van's waffles, Sandwiches with Udi bread, veggie straws, snyders GF pretzels, dinner is always a protein like chicken, burger w/ no bun. He also likes GF chicken nuggets.

Believe it or not Aldi has some quick snacks and baking mixes.

thanks for the replies....

since i feel so much better now (not even my stomach, but i even feel more awake, not so sluggish, etc) I feel like transitioning to this lifestyle hasnt been that horrible.

I pretty much have been avoiding foods that are gluteny.

i have replaced pasta with zoodles, etc.

I still havnt found a bread or wrap that I like - the ones I have tried are very dense.... so was looking for reccomendations for things like that -

the best tasting pasta, breads and the flour to use to make my own,

Lucky for me My Dad's Cookies are one of my clients!!!

Trader Joe's makes a rice bread that's gluten free. Once toasted it reminds me of a baguette or a biscotti.

Coconut flour has been a great substitute for flour baking.

Potatoes. I have been roasting them every which way, and adding toppings to sliced roasted potatoes & it's been tasty & satisfying.

Riced cauliflower has been great for sautées.
Browning them makes it toasty & crisp.

There's a brown rice wrap that's gf at Trader Joe's as well. Directions call for you to rinse it & microwave it a bit so that its less likely to crack open. And it helps. Filling it up with sautéed kale in coconut oil, toasted riced cauliflower in ghee, turkey & feta - quite tasty.

I've been gf for a while though because of gi issues, so these things might taste mighty good to me now whereas before they wouldn't seem so appealing.

I've been gluten free for 15 years and things have changed so much!

Barilla makes an amazing gf pasta. Udi's sandwich bread is good, my favorite though is schaar. You will find that in the regular bread section. You bake it to heat it up and it has the best texture and taste out of any that I've tried. Bob's Red Mill gf all purpose flour is my favorite. Betty Crocker has an amazing cookie mix that is better than regular. DH requests it all the time! I also like snyders gf pretzels. For wraps I just use mission yellow corn tortillas.
