Martial Arts - what age?
(again, I tried searching so apologies if this has been done before... it kept timing out. Am I doing something wrong? Or is the search function just that awful?)
DS is almost 4.5 years old. I wanted to get him signed up for something, and I think martial arts would be great. I understand they teach much more than the actual kicking/punching/whatever. I've heard they also focus a lot on respect and confidence and that fighting is something you only do as a last resort.
I am just wondering what is a good age to start? Is 4.5 too old? Too young? Just right?
Oh, and if anyone has any recommendations in the Suffolk area? Was looking at Waverly Martial Arts in Patchogue. It looks like it has good reviews and they have a 3-4 year old class. Anyone have any experience with this place? And if not, any other recommendations?
thanks!

Martial Arts - what age?
My son attends Waverly Martial Arts since he was about 4. He attends the special needs class, so my experience will vary only slightly.
They are excellent there. The sensei's take so much time with the kids. It's like a big family. My son is definitely learning there and enjoys going there.

Re: Martial Arts - what age?
No suggestion on place, since I do not live out there.
However, as far as age, 4.5 is good. We put DS in it this summer and he loved it! He was never into the idea of playing any sport, but wanted to continue with this.
His behavior changed instantly once he started there. DH & I were a bit when we started to notice the small changes in his behavior. It was a pleasant surprise.

Martial Arts - what age?
We started DS closer to 6 but there are kids as young as 4 in his class. He really enjoys it!
No recommendations since I don't live in your area but, I would definitely go and do a trial class and see how it goes.

Good to know, thanks! I thought I was doing something really wrong...
On the rare occasion that it DOES work, it times out if I try to go to page two!
Thank you for letting me know that it's not just me being stupid!

Re: Martial Arts - what age?
I tried it with my son at 4.5, he was not ready for it. At 6.5 I enrolled him in a class and he loves it now... There are kids in his group that are 3 and totally into it and kids that are 7 and not into it at all. Try a place out. Lots of places have trial classes..
